  • pulling motor question

when pulling the motor, (from the bottom, not that it matters) do i leave all the sensors plugged in and unplug the computer and harness from the car?
if thats the case. do i have to unplug stuff from the inside? bcm etc? thanx

Yes, when you pull the computer you will see two wires going inside the passenger compartment. Pull the pass side kick panel unplug those wires and you can then leave the harness with the engine. You will also have to unplug one wire on the a/c dryer and the cooling fans I think.

there are a few grounds you need to remove and leave with the car, alone with the positive and negative battery cables.

      k. i actually got antsy and pulled it, i do have more questions tho.

what about all the wires on the driver side that go to the the fuse boxes... headlights etc. there is a positive wire that goes from the battery cable to the fuse box. that obviously has to go.. i've only pulled motors from the top before. and if you forget to pull stuff its easy to tell, don't think it will be that way, coming out the bottom.

so your saying to unplug every thing from the car and leave the harness on the engine?

Disconnect the 3 connectors under the passenger footwell and pull those cords into the engine bay. Remove the PCM from the mount and leave it connected with the kmember+engine. There is a braided steel ground wire right by the DS motor mount bracket which needs to be removed. In addition the positive battery lead on the starter needs to be removed. There is an 2 wire connector going to each wheel, think it's mounted on the chassis. That needs to be disconnected. And I'm pretty certain that's all you need to do to drop the engine in terms of electrical wires, assuming you're dropping it with the transmission. Don't forget about the brake lines

No problem, best of luck. I swapped my motor in December so I think my memory is still fairly fresh, but keep in mind I may be forgetting something and also mine is a 98 so your car might be different.

Raise the car slowly, should be fairly obvious if something is getting stuck or if there's something I forgot to mention.

Why are you leaving the harness with the motor? Its a whole lot easier to just unplug the few sensors and drop the motor

I disagree. There are some pesky clips and things holding the harness down which are more accessible with the engine out. To remove the harness with the motor, it's just a matter of disconnecting the 3 connectors under the glove box, and the 3 or 4 connectors that run down the passenger side of the engine bay, near the shock mount.

                    Re: pulling motor question

It was alot easier for me to leave the harness with the engine as well. Those clips for the O2 sensors and the ones holding the wiring to the heads are a real pain to reach, even from underneath. If you take the computer out and unplug those three wires the rest of the harness can stay with the engine. The grounds and battery cables have to come off either way..........

i found the first one, but that second link is alot more informative!

is there no way to roll the motor out on the front wheels? or do you have to use a cart?

                            Re: pulling motor question

Well the control arm isn't fixed with the kmember so the wheels will sort of rotate (think negative camber)... although I don't think the kmember would just sit on the ground... the cart just makes it easier to move around.
