  • lifter missing its spring & circlip - Advice please!

    Well, I think I'm probably jinxed with this engine (a 1995 3.4).
Stripped out the r/h head to replace a pair of sheared exhaust manifold studs, just putting it all back together and I'm setting the lifter preloads and - WOAH! The exhaust lifter on #5 needed loads of turns on the rocker nut, so I thought "Damn - a stuck lifter, I'll need to soak it", backed off the rocker again and pulled the lifter out. The piston's right down the bottom and I spotted there's no circlip in it. Took out the piston and there's also no spring under it! Now, the engine's always ticked a bit so it looks like whoever rebuilt it before me somehow managed to lose these bits and just put the lifter back in, turned down the preload nut and set it up as a solid lifter.
OK, I really need the car Monday so can someone advise how to set the preload nut/valve stem gap here?
I'll have to wait 4 weeks for a new set of lifters here in the UK so not putting it back together ain't an option...
    Thanks!

Your going to need more then new lifters. You have to replace the camshaft also, they have to be replaced as a set. If you can find the guts to a lifter and install them in the one you have you can use it that way but putting in a new lifter will not work. The lifters and camshaft must be broken in together.

Hmm good plan, great bit of lateral thinking; I can get a parted-out old lifter and use its guts - when I have time.
In the interim, I need to use the car so have to somehow gap the valve stem. Anyone know what I should do, set the gap to 20 thou or something? Thanks in advance!

Well, I took a punt and set it to 15 thou; runs smooth with a bit of a tick but I haven't been able to get the engine really hot yet, I'll report back after tomorrow's long run!

Well, I've done about 150 miles on the setup I mentioned, nice & smooth although it's starting to rattle at about 4500rpm so I'll keep it below there for safety; the 15 thou was just a guess, maybe 10 would have been fine? Anyhow, I've now found a couple of old lifters I'll cannibalize but I may just go the whole hog and get a replacement cam & lifters anyway. At what point is it best to say "I'll just save the expenditure and get a Z28 instead" anyway? :)
