Gotcha. Saying this because mine is digital. :)

      Re: v6 to v8 swap

I'm actually in the middle of swapping a 97 cluster into my 96. It is not plug and play, the connectors are different, I purchased the connector from GM but it hasn't gotten here yet.

I tried looking up pics online of how the connector looks but couldn't find anything. i'll post ups pics when it gets here.

Unless you're saying the connector compensates for the differences between years, this is incorrect. When I swapped the 98 LS1 into my 97 camaro I went tried the 98 gauge cluster so I would have the 150mph speedometer. Even though the pinouts for the clusters are the same on alldatadiy.com between the 97 V6 and the 98 V8, it did NOT work. My 97 cluster is also analog though, so that may've been part of the problem. I decided to stay with the V6 cluster and just used HPTuners to get the 98 PCM to send the proper RPM signal to the tachometer.

If that were true, wouldn't the 98+ clusters work with the 97? From my experience I don't think this is correct in all cases.

OP: I think you've got the right idead trying to find an analog V8 cluster from a 97. Since you're going with a 96 LT1 and OBDII was introduced in 97, I wonder if that would cause any issues. (i dunnoo)

I said any 97+ cluster should work in his car because he has a 97 V6, if he decides to stay with his current wiring harness, he should be able to use a 97+ cluster.

If he swaps the harness from the 96 car, then yes he is stuck with a 93-96 cluster.

          sorry for the confusion.

EDIT: I see he mentioned he has an analog 97 cluster. JMULL have you taken your cluster out yet? I wonder even though your 97 cluster is analog, if the connector is still the same for 97+ digital clusters. The 97+ clusters with digital odometers have two rows of 17 pins.

            Re: v6 to v8 swap

Ok guys so I went and ordered a V8 1997 Guage(Digital) cluster for my car..now remember my car has analog odometer in it although I knew the speed and rpm wouldn't work I wanted to see if the digital readout would well read out and it does! it works! and the reason is is simple...in 1997 when they did the switch to the digital odo they still used the analog signals to turn the wheel or change the digits however in 1998 they went to a different type of system to getting the digits to change.

Nope the reason is in 1998 they switch the type of system used to read the readings in 1997 it was different it still used th analog signals while 98+ used a bus type signal something like that , I believe because maybe GM didnt want to switch an entire car harness mid year, and have different parts floating around for the same car they most likely just wanted to change it the next year .....thats why a 1997 Gauge Cluster will ONLY work in a 1997 car...if you would have gotten a 1997 Gauge Cluster it would have worked fine! it has nothing to do with being analog mine was and I plugged it right in and everything came on I can pm pictures if u need to see 2 believe lol. and if your swapping your dash 93-96 for a 97+ dash you MUST get a 97 gauge cluster because yours is analog signals as well. or if you would have switch the ENTIRE interior harnesses it would have worked the 98 cluster
