From a failure of an Advance Auto Parts Thermostat, my
car overheated starting pinging and now the C.R. Bearings
are shot my mechanic says.
Could I get some use out of the car if I put 50 weight oil
in it? I live in Florida...its still in the 80s.

Wtf do you expect? These things have to bear the friction one revolution ATLEAST 650 times a minute just sitting there. Throwing 50 weight isn't going to do anything....
It's less than a halfassed effort to bandaid a severe mechanical issue. Do what you want, but when the thing becomes fused to the crank and rod, you'll know what I'm talking about. Best bet is to get it fixed.

Palm, I wouldn't risk it. If your mechanic checked the bearings, then they would have had to pull the oil pan. Which is not an easy task on the stock k-member. Why not just get it all refreshed instead of running the risk of the bearings totally failing, thus ruining your crank entirely and probably washing the rest of your engine with metal shavings. Then you'll either have to get the crank turned and run off size bearings, or get a junkyard motor and hope you don't have a second run of bad luck if you don't have it refreshed first.
So like ssms stated, it's a ticking time bomb 50 weight or not.
Anyway, I've never heard of an EFI car overheating and pinging. Carbureted and running a standard distributor yes, but not on an EFI car. Our cars automatically removes timing when it senses any sort of knock and also goes into reduced timing when overheating. It would have been very hard to get knock enough to cause damage to your bearings.
If you were driving it hard while it was overheating (why drive it anyway?) you might have ruined the viscosity of the oil and it got too thin, thus causing bearing damage.
Just got off the phone with a guy who has rebuilt engines for 38 years. I told him
that this big pinging happened within 8 miles of adding Bar's Leaks Radiator Stop Leak. He said they have 4 cars in the shop now needing new engines BECAUSE OF USING THIS KIND OF PRODUCT. WARNING THIS STUFF IS DEATH TO YOUR CAMARO.

Rule of thumb is follow your owners manual or some sort of repair manual, pouring in some sort of magic liquid never fixed anything.
Wait, Is that a V6 or V8? 1990 Chevrolet C-K 1500 series 4.3L .. 5spd
1994 JDM Euno Roadster 1.8L 5spd Bolt Ons.. etc 2000 Camaro 3.8L Auto Bolt Ons..etc
Why oh why did you put that in your car? I facepalmed the moment I saw Bar's Leak. Who told you that was a good idea?
Questions:
1. Was your car leaking?
2. Did you do this just because it was overheating?
3. Was your coolant system properly bled of air after the intake gasket was replaced?
4. What makes you absolutely sure that the thermostat failed and not something getting in there and obstructing it?
5. How long did you try to drive it while overheating?
Started pinging after 6 miles after use. Mechanic told me after intake gasket replaced it might be a good idea as insurance. I am going to file a claim against
Bard leak...CS told me what I needed to do.
I rely on the mechanic to do this bleeding etc...its his judgement.
I now have to get a new f_cking engine.
I will have to have the engine overhauled at a cost of $1600 but I am putting in an insurance claim against Bar's Leak for the cost...they are insured and I am going to submit a claim to see where it goes. Good think the HQ is not near me or I would be crashing through to see the President of this company on Mon. Morning....to make my demands in person. face to face.
