  • leaking fuel rail?

Ok so im on my second motor for my 94 firebird and would like to take a stab at what's killing them before I loose another one. Here is what is doing. If the car is off for more than 12 hrs. I have to pull the number 5 plug and cycle the engine to clear the fuel out. Now the day before it just died on mye it was running stupid rich like 10:1 all the time. Then it just shut off on the highway. I checked the fuell pressure to find I was at 20psia during the prime but it would drop back to 0 in about 5 seconds. I have had the fuel pump replaced and now it just runs like crap the mech says. I have not had a chance to go and see myself but he has a good rep so I trust his word. Both of us are at a loss though as to what else is causing this issue. Thanks

If you're getting that much fuel in the cylinder, it's a leaky injector. Swap it with another cylinder and see if the problem moves. That would cause your loss of pressure.

X2... I had mutiple leaking injectors that were stuck open before. It was so bad raw fuel was leaking down the engine.

if gas was obviously going into the cylinders. why would the fuel pump even be something that was looked at? theres a check valve that will stop fuel from going back into the pump but you knew the gas was going in the opposite direction? i've got a set of good stock 2001 injectors. i just replaced them with 42lbs they only have 60k on them and have been out of the car for like 4 months. edit: i dont think they'll fit your car, but i could be wrong

I did the fuel pump because it would not prime after the first attempt and the car wouldn't run at all. Now it runs like crap so im thinking you guys are right and there is one or more bad injectors.

Ok I know I took along time to update but I pulled the rail and after replacing the pressure reg and checking for a leak I don't see any improvement and there are no leaks I can see. I get some pressure like before but the same result it just drops. Im no sure what else to look for I don't see any fuel leaks at all so I don't think its a fuel line puncture.

I would check your fuel pump.

                  Re: leaking fuel rail?

Good news I had the feeling that the feed line would be the problem so I swapped the line from walbro to a section of black rubber fuel line from AutoZone and guess what. I have constant pressure!!! the system needs to be bled but on the first prime I saw 20psi and with each prime after that it would go up.

Oh for anyone that remembers me having to replace the engine in august I think I found what was causing the flooding on cylinder5 ans sometimes 3. The fuel pressure reg that was in the car had a tare in the diaphram and I imagine would fill with fluid when the pump was on. thus draining through the vac line and to the rear of the manifold. this would then fill the back of the intake manifold cross piece. when the engine would start it was probably drawn to the #3 and 5 cylinders because they are right next to each other and right up against the rear of the manifold. When my old engine was being checked the valves on the #3 and 5 cylinders did not move at all while the engine was running.

good thing bout racetronix kit. comes with a new flex hose. so you don't have to deal with making a rubber hose work.

That flex hose they supply is junk. I've had one eaten through by fuel (VP MS109), and another that just wouldn't seal. I've swapped to a regular rubber hose with my Walbro and Racetronix pumps.

I'm still on the flex hose from my Walbro 255 , its been about 10 years and still good.
