Evening gentlemen, I have decided that I would like to eventually install a cam in my firebird but I realize there are some extra upgrades required to support it. Anyone running the GT2 cam please chime in. I currently have 101k miles on the car and was wondering if this will require other maintenance as well? Anyway, what would be a smart way of going about the install as far as upgraded parts go? I want this done right so please help me here guys, thanks!

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
New valvesprings, locks, retainers and a new timing chain and tensioner to begin with. That's pretty much a given on any camshaft install.
There will be others to help chime in, but that's the basics. You'll need new valve cover and timing cover gaskets. Might as well install a new waterpump and thermostat while you're at it.

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
Your going to need some tuning also, you'll throw PO300's with the cam, will need idle set higher along with some more fueling.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

New rocker bolts, cam, crank bolt, all new gaskets, while your in there new valve seals, lifters and pushrods. An the tune like said, I have lots of problems with idle until it warms up until I can get a tune.
Headers and exhuast if you dont already have them.

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
PCM for less would do it for $150 I think it is. About 3-4 months ago I tuned Mousemonsters 2000 firebird with a GT2 cam. It was night and day difference with the cam tuned. I ended up adding fuel through the RPM band since it was leaner. I would get a wideband to make sure your not running lean.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
Oh really? Wow that's much better. That's mail order tune correct? Thanks for the help I want this cam so bad..as some of you know I'm already building duals and installing so as long as I'm diligent and careful with the cam install I should be ok right? This is the first big project I'll be attempting, plus I'll have a helping hand.

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
If you do PCM4less I would tell them what cam and tell them to richen it up through the RPMS, its better to run rich then lean, Also only add a few degrees timing as you don't want KR.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
Knock retard-KR When the car sees KR because of too much timing is bad for the motor and can blow something up.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: GT2 Camshaft Install Help
So I have gathered most of the valvetrain replacements and I spoke with my uncle today who owns an slp edition ls1. He believes I am taking a risk with me installing a cam because it will cause the bottom half of the engine more stress. With a brand new valvetrain I can't see how this would be as it really doesn't interact with the lower half. Am I wrong?Last edited by Brians00Blackbird; 05-29-2012, 12:19 AM.
