  • Stuck oil pump relief valve

Here's a pic of the timing cover off of my old engine that spun a bearing minutes after I bought the car for my son. The piston for the oil pump relief valve is stuck in. Does that mean that the filter was permanently bypassed OR could not bypass?

Below is a pic of the oil filter that I cut open. My guess is that the oil filter was completely clogged and could not bypass and starved the motor of oil.

Can you pull that piece out with a magnet and get the spring out?

If I tried I could probably pull it out. We already put in a new long block from a 2006 grand prix. Just curious as to how/if the stuck relief valve contributed to the failure.

Welcome to the bane of the 3800 that most people in the community don't know about.

The oil filter bypass will get jammed up with stuff especially if the filters look that bad. They'll pop open, sending unfiltered oil and media to the oil galleys in the crank, either clogging the holes or just washing the bearings in some nasty stuff and all causing failures.

Also check the little plug on the oil filter adapter.
