  • Got a little problem

I went to check my oil earlier, and when I pulled the dipstick out it was broken off right at the full line. Am I able to put like a big speaker magnet on my oil pan to try and get that piece of metal to stick to it till i can drop the pan, or should I just stop driving the car altogether? The reason Im asking is because this is my only mode of transportation right now. Thanks guys.

I wouldn't drive it. Piece of metal just floating around can't be good, especially if it could be stuck in the windage tray, oil pan, etc.

It could be a $500.00 mistake if you do drive it,as long as you got the money to fix it if it doesn't work the magnet idea seems reasonable.

I wouldn't risk driving it until you get the piece out.

I doubt the magnet would work from outside the pan. It would have to be inside to have the force to attract metal, outside the magnet is basically only going to contact the pan and not be strong enough to attract metal through it (alot of hot rodders put magnets inside just to be safe) unfortunately I think you should pull the pan.....

try just dumping the oil? Maybe you'll get lucky and it will come out with the oil?

id definitely try coaxing it out with a magnet with the pan empty.. its worth a shot.

Yeah I definatly don't wanna drop the k to do it, I'm about due for an oil change anyway so ill try to drain it out first then try the magnet.

If it doesn't come out when you drain the oil, you might consider taking the oil level sending sensor out of the side of the pan and fishing from there, its a bigger hole than the drain plug.

the only issue I see here, is what if a small chip that you dont notice is also around in the motor somewhere...

the level sensor idea is good... i have a magnet thats on a very flexible shaft that i got from vatozone. if you get it out pull the dipstick and make sure nothing is missing.
