Anybody have guestimate of cost to have a shop replace rear main seal in 2002 Camaro V6? It's my son's car who is about 200 miles away at college. From his description I'd guess that is what it is. Are those engines known for that problem?

Re: Cost of rear main seal?
I asked him to look where it was leaking from and he said towards the front. He described a rectangular black box under the belts?? I sure don't know what he's talking about unless it would be the frame cross member. If it's anything like my 68 which has a large heavy cross member under the front half of the block. Of course oil dripping from that could come from about anywhere but probably not the rear main seal.
I hope he can get it into a shop there to have it looked at this week. He wants to come home Wednesday.

Why not wait for him to come home so you can check it out? Re: Cost of rear main seal?
I'd like that but I'm afraid. He has an appointment Wednesday morning to have it looked at down there. Hopefully they'll see what it is and maybe they can fix that day but if not we can decide then if he should chance driving it home. He wants to go back Sunday so that doesn't leave much time for a repair here if it's anything major.

Re: Cost of rear main seal?
If its the front seal thats possible to do in the car. Mine spat the seal out last fall. Pull the belts, get a puller, yank off the balancer, replace. Hardest part is laying over the front of the car and getting it out. 2 hours and its done.
Rear seal, K member would have to come out. Honestly, if it was the rear seal and not leaking too bad I would just let it mark its territory. The rear seal was toast on mine but I didnt care. I just regasketed my entire motor and it still leaks from a few spots.

Re: Cost of rear main seal?
The shop said it was the oil pressure sending unit. I've never heard of one of those leaking oil that fast. My son said he lost a quart over night after having driven it only about 10 miles. I hope that shop knows what they are doing. I've never used them but they are 200 miles away from me. I'm just going on recommendations.
Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Re: Cost of rear main seal?
Oil sending unit is on the front cover ,its under high pressure when the engine is running. Its a easy fix about $30. If thats the only thing wrong with it your pretty lucky.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake
96' Camaro M5 to A4 conversion, alot of mods . GT35R Turbo full suspension. Built engine

Re: Cost of rear main seal?
That's good to hear it is in the front of the engine. That's where the leak was according to my son. When I spoke with the repair guy before he saw the car, he thought the sending unit was towards the rear of the engine but then he may have thought we had a V8.
