  • MegaSquirt EFI controller....

I have heard a few people within a few forums talk about this MegaSquirt EFI controller. I read up a little on it, did some searches, didn't come up with many testimonials. Anyone know of anyone that is using this setup?? I know TurboProject was using one, but he hasn't posted in several months from what I can tell. I am really considering doing this setup, only because it is extremely cheap, and I have the time to do all the wiring myself. Just curious of the success or horror stories.

I was thinking about getting one.
You have to know what you are doing if you are going to use one.
Like doing the wiring your self goes back to knowing what your doing.

      You're right...I haven't posted in a long time.

I just now saw this post.

I'm still running the MegaSquirt and it's still doing great. I recently upgraded it a little bit to running ignition as well as fuel. So now I have complete control over fuel and ignition timing. It just took a flashing of different code into the controller and a few hardware tweaks. I also build a small daughter card to give me knock sensing, cooling fan on/off, and boost control. The ignition system is based off a Ford EDIS DIS system.

I got all of the details on how to build in these features from here:
      http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/index.html

Here are some pics of my setup:
      http://home.att.net/~basic-4/2ndMega...egasquirt.html

That shows the crank timing gear I put on the crank pully as well as the sensor and timing tape I made to check the timing. The rest of the pics show the megasquirt itself along with the card that has the extra features.

These pics show the part I made out aluminum on a lathe to mount the timing wheel to the crank pully

Just to give an idea of time involved:

When I built the megasquirt the first time for fuel only I did it slowly over a course of about 4 nights it it turned out really clean. You just need a good soldering iron(small tip) and some basic soldering knowledge.

Then to wire everything up it took me about a day and a half.

I'd say the thing that takes the most time is the learning curve as far as taking in all the information that is published and at least partially understanding it.

For wiring, factory service manuals really come in handy to tell you all the colors of the wires and what wire goes to what.

You can buy pre made Mega Squirt kits online. All you have to do is wire up the sensors and what not. Thats what I plan on doing....

Yup, you can also do that.

I chose to save $110 and build it myself.
