All the pinouts are the same... it's just the phiscal PCM that changes.
It's a direct swap, just pull ou the 96 and put in the 97.... one good thing to do is remove the knock module from your current PCM and throw it in the 97.. the knock module contains crank and cam positions that were programmed into it via a tech-2... most likely a new pcm will work no prob without doing this it's just an extra precaution. no damage will occur though if you do not do this. If there is a problem you will be notified with an SES light.
BTW, i myself have upgraded 2 96 cars to a 97 pcm.. just simply unplug battery, remoe PCM and insert new one. I did not transfer the knock modules over on these and there was no prob.
btw, the knock module is located on the side of the pcm with 2 star bit screws... in 98 the knock module setpu was disconinued and knock detection is built internally on the pcm.
