I was researching and ran into a problem. The rear mounted distributor is either too tall or it wont clear the firewall. Not sure which but alot of work would have to be done to get around this. I think Ill go with an LT1 and auto (to save $$) and just put head and cam in it. I found a package that claims 430 hp for about 2 grand. That would be sweet.

quote:
I have seen a carbed 502, in a 98+ SS, stock hood and everything, it ran high 13s, sounds like a waste of money on that, but it will be a improvement for 4th gens.

My friend ran 13.7 in his 2000 formula and all i think he has done to it is exhaust. It wouldn't be a bad project to do if you had a 3.4 or 3.8 and you were wanting the power of an 8 and had a lot of money to blow. Personally i'd just buy a new car. But if you already had a 98SS I can't find it reasonable to change the engine in that. With the amount of money he probably spent can you imagine everything he could of done to that 98SS?

I can really tell that most of you have never built a pre-computer small block. Tuning is very easy. FOr the price of what you people are spending on superchargers for your computer cars, I had almost 500 HP melting the wheels. Emissions: Technically it is illegal to put an older moter in a newer car. But, if all that you have is sniffer testing and no underhood, then you can get away with it. And please, unless your car is still under warranty, those old motors are far more reliable. Just like any motor, you need to do a lot of research before you start anything. This board is not the place to do it either. Start by reading what professionals have done in Magazines like HotRod and Super Chevy or anything like that. I wish I had more time, I could go on for hours. It all depends on YOUR personal preference. IMOA, I a planning it too, I will do it. I'm going to build a 302. But, do it in something classy, you can get a very nice classic car cheaper than your camaro/firebird.1995 Firebird 3.8 A4, 140,000 miles and going strong
Basically Stock, college=poor
Junior Mechanical Engineering Student: Milwaukee School of Engineering; Cpl, MN Army National Guard...just got promoted :)

do a search on this website Golen Engine Service and look in chevy section for 383 LT1 street/Strip. i called those guys and the told me, the big block 383 LT1 has 480HP. Very good haah, and it would fit on our cars, they has seen a lot of conversions from our V6 to V8's, according to them even our trannie 4L60E would work with this engine. we need to replaces another things though like gears, diferential (you don't want to spin 1 tire and besides we need something to support the amount of torque this engine can do. and for us living in california it'd pass smog check. i think it would be nice to get a car to smoke those 2003 cobra's without the SS badge on the back, jejejejeje

i dont know what you are saying that fuel injection is better than carberation, lets see. Yes is smaller power bands its nice 2-500 maybe, but if you get into 6 7 800 hp, EFI wont keep up and if you do its more that a $200 intake and $300 carb. In my opinion its easier to work on a carb motor, listen to it rev it, gimme a flat head and its fixed, i dont have to worry about codes or computers or all that, just a 12v lead to distributar start switch and a 1-wire altenator. thats my electronics.
by the way, this is what i was rasied on is small block chevys.
personally i think that a old school 383, trick flow heads, air gap intake and a holly 750. hmm i give it low 11's1/4 14.1 @ 99
1/8 9.2 @ 77

One solution to the distributor problem...see about going to a crank trigger set-up, I believe they have them for the older engines. Also, you can use a 93 4L60, it's the pre-electronics version.
And yes, the cam is the big reason why the older engines sound better, you can go much more radical with the cams on a carbed car than you can on a computer controlled car.Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.

1999 3.8 A4 Y87
Navy Blue Metallic
BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s,
WS6 Wheels (17x9)
Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter
FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody
2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes,
MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs
Performance Cryogenics treated rotors
1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms
1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350

Holy thread resurrection Batman! I'm glad to see there was a little response to this idea. This was something that was completely hypothetical and mainly just out of curiosity. I have since solved my V8 problem by buying a 94 Formula M6 355 w/ a 17# Vortech T-Trim on it. That should be more than enough for a while. :DMy Old Car - 2000 Silver V6 Bird

The replacement-
94 Firebird Formula - 383, TH400, and a big blower
http://community.webshots.com/user/fastblackcar94
