  • put a 2.8l or a 3.1 L in a 4th gen 3.4L?

I know why owuld anyone do this? basiclly if I trash something on my motor, its getting old, and I still reve it hard, but other then that gets good treatment. Could you feasible put a 2.8lL or a 3.1L in while say I was fixcng or upgrading my 3.4L. Yes i know I will have a performance loss, but everything will fit, problem I was worried about was woud it run rich all the time, assuming hte 3.4l would use a significant amount more fo fuel. Any otehr problems?

Jsut saying this is I am having a hard tiem finding an affordable 3.4l, and I know I could get a 2.8L, for a dime a dozen and have not really looked into 3.1L yet.

I don't know much about it, but here are a few people who have gone from 2.8 to a 3.4. It should give an idea of how hard it would be. From what I have seen it doesn't seem hard, but for the price diffrence between a 2.8 and a 3.4, I would just buy another 3.4. That way you have an extra one for parts and experimentation.

It is a page with links to sites of people who have done all kinds of engine swaps

They sell the engines (2.8,3.1,3.4) you are talking about, and have some info on swaps at the bottom of the page.

    Hope this helps ya.

Interesting topic. doing the bass ackwards swap.
Yes, do the 3.4-3.1 swap. reuse 3.4 induction, front cover, distributor plug, basicly the exact opposite of what i'm doing. 2.8 are cheap, 3.1 will give you slightly more power. swap oil pans, the 2.8, or at least the 85 doesn't have the sensors in it. Oh yeah, check the later yr 2.8/3.1 for knock sensor locations. reuse motormount brackets.....you know the drill.

yeah its just my mini search has been $600+ for 3.4L locally, anything else is $400-500 + shipping which is expensive, I have seen 2.8L for like $150. I would go for a 3.1, but I know RWD 2.8L are more prevalent cuz of they were in some caddies, s-10s, blazers, and 3rd gens.

check e-bay. there's always a company based in FL that is selling the 3.4 w/30 day warranties. Also, ask some friends of a friend of a friend. That's how Nachius hooked me up w/my motor for $210. Yeah I hada 12 hr road trip there& back, but after gas money was spent, I saved about $250-300 over a comprable engine locally.

man I understand what you are saying about price difference.. but I think you should know that those 2.8's in the s-serise pickups and such do have a problem with snapping cranks.. had a mechnaic tell me that sometime back.. I was like naah not stock... had to put a new motor in my blazer... (rebuld) and what happened.. crank broke 16k miles into it.. this was a quality long block from a very reputable company too.. if you can find one out of a wrecked s-series without too many miles.. I'd say go for it.. the reason I say all this is because I am guessing while your 3.4 was out you would still be depending on your car as a daily driver..
