• LT1 vs LS1

ok i know the ls1 is an amazing engine and i love it but i haven't heared anything about how dependable they are over time after being modded out (ie turbo, cam, stroker kit, etc). so my question is should i buy an ls1 or lt1 to replace my V6. im wanting something that can some modding and still be like 85-90% dependable (needing a little work every few months).

both are good.

the LT1 has the optispark, which can give trouble.

My LS1 has given 30,000 miles of trouble free operation, in the past 18 months.

do it right with either motor, and you will be fine, cut corners, and you will have problems.

Just wanted to throw out there that we offer not only aluminum LS1 blocks, but also the LQ9 6.0L iron blocks too at a veery low cost:) Also check out our pricing on Eagle 4" cranks and other bottom end parts. One could actually build an iron block stroker motor fairly inexpensively It seems strange to me with the large number of V6 guys swapping in V8's, why more of them don't go bigger/better than stock when they have the motor out and can be easily modified. Just a thought.

Also testing my new avatar:)

a good thought, but if money was no object everybody woudl order 422-427 strokers when they're swapping, coming up with 3500-5000 in cash is hard to do. Going stroker, add another 3500, then add tuning, headers, you need a better set of heads, springs, cam, ..... after all, who wants to have a 427 with stock heads, lol ;)

But if i was swapping a motor, i would AT LEAST put in some LS6 springs for cheap insurance, and and possibly a LS6 or other small cam.

but if you guys could come up with a kit with all of the parts needed, other than the longblock for the swaps, you might sell a few larger motors for conversions

Ryan.

Running 9psi, they make 580rwhp/681rwtq. The LS1 is very capable and reliable. They say they haven't been able break it yet.

</font>
it is not that they can't break it, it is they tuned it, so it does not break, 100+ dyno runs to get the AF correct...

don't take just 1 example/fluke to think the LS1's are undestructable. They're not.

that car has also not seen astrip in that form, to my knowledge either ;)

They are great motors though ;) I like mine.

plain and simple. I dont know what year your camaro is but if its 93-97 get an lt1, if its 98 up get an ls1, less hassle this way.

Both are great motors but i think ls1 has more potential.

Lt1's are alot cheaper to mod internally.

The best thing about the LS1 is that it is a sleeved engine. Come 150k miles or so you can just resleeve it and replace all the seals and BAM new motor.

i hate the sound of V10's. I think im gonna sell my pontiac 400 small block and see about getting an ls1 and rebuilding it. I just hope i prep my car well enough that it doesnt just rip it apart (its a vert so there is that possibillity). thanks for all the info though.

ok i have one last question about the ls1, is it like our motors where we have the bastrd year 98 or are they all created equal.

The Fbody motors are not the same for every year.
I got this info from LS1Tech

1998

1. Had differnet casting heads which had perimeter bolts and valve covers.
2. Ignition coils were mounted to the valve covers one at a time.
3. The water temp gauge actually works.
4. Only LS1 year to not have an oil life monitor
5. 1998-1999 LS1 cars had a smaller throttle body cam, which caused the throttle to open to WOT faster than 2000+ cars
6. 1998 cars had 28 lb fuel injectors from the factory
7. 1998-2000 cars had a larger cam than the 01-02 cars
8. 1998-1999 cars had more restrictive exhaust manifolds
9. 1998-2000 cars had an LS1 intake with EGR
10. 1998 only LS1 blocks had a much smaller cylinder sleeve that only tolerated a .005" hone
11. 1998 only cars had a different PCV system with the PCV valve located above the passenger side valve cover
12. 1998 only cars did not have an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body
13. 1998 cars have a completely different PCM from 99+ cars
14. A production shortage of F-body cams caused the use of a C5 cam to be installed in F-body LS1s for a very short time

1999

1. 1999-2000 cars switched to 26 lb fuel injectors
2. Cylinder heads and valve covers redesigned to have center bolts instead of perimeter bolts. Other than that, the heads were the same.
3. Redesigned cylinder sleeves that allowed for a small bore, up from .005" in 1998 models.
5. 1999 cars continued the LS1 intake with EGR provisions
6. 1999 cars continued more restrictive exhaust manifolds and larger cam
7. Water temp gauge was redesigned to work basically as a dummy gauge and only show an overheat condition.
8. An oil life monitor was added to all LS1s, thus changing the gauge cluster a little to show the oil life reset swtich
9. 1999-02 cars had a different PCV system with the valve located to the side of the intake manifold

2000

1. Redesigned exhaust manifolds for new emissions standard actually flowed better and created a little more HP.
2. 2000 continued use of LS1 Intake, EGR, smaller cam, and 26 lb fuel injectors
3. Throttle body cam was increased in size to slow the speed at which the car reaches WOT
4. Starting 2000 intake lids contained a seperate breather filter

2001

1. A small percentage of 2001 and 2002 LS1s actually had LS6 blocks which had a different part number and a darker metal cast
2. Starting 2001, all LS1s came with an LS6 intake manifold without an EGR system
3. 2001-02 cars have a smaller cam from the Vortec truck engines to increase low end torque
4. 2001-02 cars had 28 lb fuel injectors like the 98 cars (albeit different part numbers)

2002

1. 2002 LS1 head gaskets redesigned. The new ones are a pressed metal, as opposed to the graphite ones and are no longer specific to the side of the car theyre installed on
2. 2002 cars continued with the LS6 intake, 28 lb fuel inectors and smaller truck cam
3. 2002 continued the use of an LS6 block in some LS1 F-bodies
