  • Looking for a good cam for a 3.4

I don't know too much about valvetrains but I want to get a camshaft and maybe some rocker arms and stuff. I saw these at ammperformance.com:

    Camshaft:
    226°/236° @ .050" Duration
    .463/.474 @ 1.5 Rocker Ratio

    - CompCams 1.6:1 Roller Tipped Rocker Arm/Hardened Pushrod Kit
    (RP1414.12)
    - CompCams Hydraulic Flat Tappet Lifters
    (802.12)
    - CompCams Valve Springs
    (980.12)
    - CompCams Valve Spring Retainers
    (742.12)
    CompCams Valve Locks
    (601.12)

So my question is...are all these going to work for me or am I going to need custom heads?

might not need them, but will benefit from PP'ing them to take advantage of the cam

get one like I had, a crane 272 cam with Kmotion K-700 springs
$242 in parts but you will need new lifters, Make sure the cam has a cam trigger and not distributor gear.
You could stick with a no more than .480'' lift cam and Kmotion valve sptings for some fast cheap power and keep every thinng else stock.

when viper calls the 3.4 head crappy he is being very, very nice.
I think they are a wast of cast iron.
They only have 85cc intake ports, you will need to grind out about another 50cc's to take full advantage of that cam with your car n/a.

So if I get that cam but keep the 1.5 rockers I can still use my stock heads?

So without the 1.6 rockers is it still a good idea to get the rest of those other parts like springs, lifters, etc...?

The distributor gear turns the oil pump, so you don't have any choice here!

oops, well make sure it has a cam trigger.
You can use 1.6 rockers but you just can't go over .480''
To go over .480'' on those heads you will need some new valve locks or get the valve guides machined down for any thing over .480'' (say you want .5'' you should take it down .020'' or .030'' and so on).
I wouldn't get the rest of the package with outh the 1.6 rockers.
with 1.6 rockers you will have about .510'' lift.
I think you can get K-700 springs crane +.050'' valve locks and 1.6 rockers and make it work with every thing else stock.
I'll have to check it with my heads, cause I have some +.050'' locks and other stock parts.

So if I were to just go ahead and buy this cam I'd be able to use all my stock valvetrain components?

with a big cam you should get cam bearings also. along with these parts,
                    lifters
                    valvesprings for the cam
                    valveseals
                    pushrods
                    and of course the cam

and also make sure that is the cam is designed with a 1.5 rocker that you get a 1.5 rocker. or it might interfere with the pistons or cause something that you dont want.
                    boost, you got it???
