  • Junkyard Scavange, What to look for?

Hey guys, I'm looking to supe up the 3.8L for as little dough as possible and I think the junkyard around here called U-Wrench-It might just be the place to search for some parts. Problem is I dunno what to really look for! I'm thinking about a upper and lower 3.8L intake manifold so I can have it P&P without taking mine off the car. Maybe some bigger injectors off a V8 or a L67? And an aluminum driveshaft off a V8.

Any tips on how to look for these things or what parts I should definitely make sure I get along with them while I'm at it? I've never made a junkyard run before so its all pretty new to me. Any advice is well appreciated!

Note: I put this topic here because it does concern both intake manifolds and bigger injector sizes. The driveshaft is just tacted on there cuz I'm too lazy to make two topics about the same thing!

most junkyards that let you pull your own stuff only have older cars. late model stuff is usually dismantled professionally for more profit.
there are a few things you can look for though.
look at s-series trucks. the option sheet(RPO List) can usually be found in the glove compartment. many of these truck cam eequiped from teh factory with 3.73 gears, just look for option code GT4 on the list and you will have a set. gears are always a nice gain for a reasonable price. other gear set codes are GU6 for 3.42 gears, and GU5 for 3.23 gears, some 4cyl + 4wheels drive s-series vehicles also have GT7, that is for 4.10 gears.
also you can look in 88 and up f-bodies and s-series trucks for option code G80, that is for a factory posi unit. installing a posi, even with you current gear set is a good way to be a bit quicker off the line. the reason you need one from an 88 and up vehicle is because GM changed the splines on the axle after teh 87 model year.
if you look under a lot fo 3rd gens you may be able to find some good mandrel bent 3inch tubing that you can modify for a cat back on your car on the cheap too.
if you see a 4th gen or if the place also carries late model stuff, grabbing an extra set of rims to mount up soem racing rubber is always a good idea.
    good luck
