• Heads install ( Few More questions ? )

I wish I had more free time to spend on my car, If I did I would be done by now. This is taking forever.

Well one last question. Do I need to use any kind of sealant on the head gaskets or head bolts? I am using GM gaskets and GM head bolts all new.

I was looking in my manual and it said to torque the head bolts 37 ft. #'s. Then It says turn an additional 130*degrees. Is there any kind of tool that measures the 130* or is it just guess work?

In the manual it says to wipe down gasket surfaces with laquer thinner or acetone. Will Brake cleaner or carb cleaner work?

Any other tips before I proceed?

torque angle gauge is used to measure the extra degrees. i would suggest using one instead of guessing.

btw, the 99 factory manual says 120deg instead of 130. you may want to check out this discrepancy.
no need for sealant on the head gasket. spray adhesive may be used to hold it in place while positioning head on block.
using sealant on head bolt threads will result in improper torque readings. it is okay to put a dab on the very end of the bolt going into the hole.

when tightening head bolts (these are torque-to-yeild bolts) use a 3-step procedure to reach the final torque. follow the tightening sequence 3 times, adding 1/3 of the specified torque each time so after the 3rd time you are at final speicfied torque. remember to chase the holes with a tap before installing bolts.

Absolutely. I think thats the best said install help I've read so far. This is why I'm scared to take my car somewhere to have my engine "done" for me I prefer to do these little steps myself and know its done correctly.

When I bought the head bolts for my LS1 from the dealership, they all had a small portion of sealant at the end of the threads....I would follow the previous suggestion and do the same.

I don't see a reason for the torque specs to change from 99 to 00.. same block, bolts, and pretty much.. heads..
