  • 3.8 Swap

    I'm getting an LT1 Z28, it has a lot of miles and I'm getting the car for next to nothing. I was thinking about insteading of rebuilding the LT1 dropping in a turbo 3.8, my main reason for this are, I want to road race and not drag race. I see a lot of the guys with GTPs runing real good. I dont want to do the ls1 swap because like I said I'm not looking for a drag car, I could build the Lt1 up with heads cam and a fresh bottom

    I would build the LT1 up. Good heads and cam...
    Maybe a charger...

      Swap a V8 with a V6? That is taking a HUGE step backwards. What a tool.

        If you swap in a Turbo V6 make sure it's a GN, GNX or a Turbo T/A engine. The LS-1 is a very good road racing engine, built to ASA specs it is a awesome road race engine. The LT-1 could be given an LT-4 upgrade and be a very competative car as well, the LS-1 however is lighter..

          yeah, it would be a LOT more practical to rebuild the LT1. or you can find a bare LT1 block for like $200, if I was in your situation, I would take the car, find another block, get it stroked to a 383 and build it. swap your accessories onto the fresh engin, and transplant that into your car.

              christ, im so tired of the friggin god-like LS1 mentality. hes got a LT-1 for next to nothing. its set up for the LT-1 engine. you can build a LT-1 to mad power output. for what it would cost just to buy a used LS1 engine, you could build an incredible top end on the LT1. why the hell would you go to the trouble AND COST of converting it to LS1 when you can build a 400 RWHP LT1 for just the cost of a stock? theres already plenty of them out there to model after. if he was going from 3800 to v8 then that would be a different story..but even so you run into the fitment issues in a pre-98 body style.
              Ive read up quite a bit on LT-1/LT-4 engines and will be building one of my own soon. Email me if you want some suggestions going that route.

                The LT-1 is a good engine, the LS-1 is lighter ie better for road racing, which I believe is what he said he was doing. It has nothing to do with the godlike LS-1 attitude. Personally for a road racing application I'd take the Turbo Buick engine over either V8.. It's lighter and can produce as much if not more power.

                    I would keep the LT1, and that's coming from a flag flyen V6er.

                        LT1 all the way. unless gass mileage is a problem more diplacement is always better. besides you can always turbo the v8 and have more power than any civic could dream about. as of right now i have yet to see our v6 get mre than 350hp and if that is enough for you an mileage matters then and only then would i take the step backwards to the v6. now if you go with the old turbo series one... the sky is the limit on power but it will cost more to build that up than your LT1.
