• Yeap, another tick tick post

Ok, I have searched I think every tick tick, tic tic, click click, clicking/ticking post on here over the last year. And sadly enough I have read everyone. Well, I have come with some ideas about the ticking I'm hearing from the post I have read, but I failed to find one that was like what I'm getting.

K, lets see if I can explain it here. Well, when I start my car up, let it be hot or cold, i don't hear any ticking other than when I raise my hood, I can hear my injectors ticking away, they have been ticking since the first day I took her for a test drive, a little louder now, due to the mods I've done. But, lets get on with the problem. Now, lets say I rev her up, to about 2 to 3k rpms. i don't hear any ticking, other than the slight tic from the injectors, now lets take her for a drive. As soon as I start to push the gas past lets say 1/4 and on, i can hear the ticking. if i barely press the gas lets say 1/4 of the way and less, then i hear no ticking. So, it seems the ticking only occurs during load on the engine and no other time. And when I say load I don't just mean reving, just when i have it in gear like 1st through 5th and only above 1/4 and on as for pushing the gas pedal. Also, the tick does seem to get a little faster as I press the gas more, well as the rpms go up under load(in gear). So what would it be? Any ideas? I've thought of about everything and I just can not figure it out.

I'm thinking maybe exhaust leak maybe. I've changed my spark plugs and wires twice since I've heard the tick. So, it's not them, I have thought may it's just my injectors be loud. What confuses me is where it only ticks during load(in gear)and only at 1/4 to max pressing the gas pedal. I hope all this sounds right, I'll try and read over it later. It's getting late and I'm tired and need to go to bed soon.

Thanks for any help that you can give.

If it only does it under load then yes its an exhaust leak. Ive heard many like this. When the car is under load the exhuast gases are hotter than when the motor is under no load no matter the RPM due to the amount of gas being burned inside the chamber and when that extremely hot gas is released it expands very rapidly, more so than when there is no load. Most likely its leaking at either the headers or where the one if the headers connects to the Y-Pipe. But thats just my guess.

I had a ticking under load once, I wouldn've sworn it was the trans dieing after close inspection, not a lifter cuz i've killed a lifter before so I knew it wasn't that, it ended up being a good portion of the header gasket that was gone. I couldn't hear it when the hood was up but you could feel it if you put you're hand withing 6", I could feel it under load, bad, but not hear it at idle nor @ neutral revving.

        Could also be a lifter..heh

Yeah, my first thought was exhaust leak from the headers. But, I've had so many other things go through my mind I wanted to see what everyone else thought. There is a bolt missing from the header on the passenger side header. The exhaust shop I had them installed at sucks, after they made a mess of the entire install. I had exhaust leaks everywhere, I've started taking her to a performance shop since then for any work like welding needs, or stuff that I would need a lift to work on. Plus I know the guy that owns it son, so they help me out quite a bit. :D Guess I'll be getting me some gaskets for the headers again. I'll let the performance shop install them for me. I probably won't be fixing it anytime soon, I'm not use to the ticking noise, but as long as it doesn't hurt anything, I'm happy. I plan on putting a supercharger on her next year, so, if it can hold off until then, that would be great since I'm going to probably have to change some stuff in the engine out since I have 74,000 miles on her right now.
