• An IGNITION or EMISSIONS problem? discuss here.

I'm posting this in advanced because I believe it is advanced tech. Feel free to move this, but we're dealing with two issues at the same time here, which can be closely interwoven...anyhow...

A little background info. I was a while overdue on an oil change (65000 mile engine on Blend 10w-30). I usually go every 3000 to 3500, but I was closer to 5000 or so. Well, it started to misfire, and since the plugs were used, I figured I'd knock out two birds with one stone. I noticed though that under load, not only would I misfire, It would miss so nastily it made a knocking noise. nearly bad enough to make it sound like the catalytic converter was going. Bit of info number two, I had the converter replaced (stock for stock) about 15-20k ago. At one point I got the flashing SES.

Go on a little farther, change the oil and plugs. Idles smoother. Seems to have a little better pickup. Problem solved? No. Go to pass someone at 20mph in second gear, WHACKWHACKWHACK says mr Knock. CRAP. I checked on the wires when I got home from class that night, and yeah, they had some nice shiners on them. So i swapped those back in for the stockers, which have seen probably 25000 miles total use. ALL connections perfect, so it seems. Idles better, when revved up in neutral the kind of PULSE that would come from possibly(?) an intermittent misfire was eliminated. All connections were good on autolite 606's and stock wires, BUT i could see very intermittent few and far between little blue spots of light in the darkness. Arcing? Don't know.
Move on to today. Car is absolutely SLUGGISH. Just trying too hard to accelerate. Not misfiring, at least not bad enough to cause jerkiness or that loud knocking noise, but NOTICEABLY sluggish non the less. Backpressure building up? Coil packs going out? Plugs and wires have been replaced...One or two coils was replaced at ~30,000 miles. Could one of those, or another be going sour as well? But TONIGHT, car ran absolutely like a scalded dog. Awesome getup and go.

The reason I go asking these questions, Is because one, after much resarch, and talking to member "Jason", who is a mechanic at a GM dealership, we hadn't come to a definite answer. it could be emissions related (O2 sensor replaced at ~53000???), it could be ignition related, it could be both.
I don't know, I'd like to have a 'meeting of the minds' of those who peruse adv tech to help me out. I could just as easily Hack the convertor off and weld in a straight pipe, or go buy a new ignition module and coils, But trial and error just isn't in order here. Thanks for help in advance.

Well now, seems we have an update.

KEITH, FEEL FREE TO MOVE THIS TO GENERAL IF YOU LIKE. I don't feel it's so advanced anymore, here's why.

Only stumbles under more than 50% throttle or so. I think it's either the ignition module or a coil pack. But, could it be something else? Fuel Pressure maybe? The last two days it ran great. I got it out of the parking garage at school today though, and got another flashing ses when I tried to accelerate more than half throttle.

My vote is for the MAF. When mine went it did the same thing. I t was fine at a low even speed, if I tried to step on it, it would miss badly. I think it was a MAF low voltage(signal) code.

well i haven't thrown any codes yet, it's been intermittent sluggish/good for 4 days now, if I throw a code in the next few days I'll check on it, but i'm still thinking it's ignition related...i HOPE anyway

clogged cat wont throw a code..

if you have a welder and some balls.. jsut cut the exhaust off before the cat.. see waht happens.. i am confident though..

cause at like 50% the car will run fine.. its jsut a matter of when the cat can no longer support the gas flow.. thats when it will back up like a train wreck.. and well.. things get sluggish..

umm, yes a clogged cat will.

catalyst below efficiency threshold or something like that. But it takes the PCM a LONG freaking time to realize it

Any 3.8s in your area that are running fine that you can try their coil packs on your car?

Have you washed the engine bay recently?

coil packs guaranteed...

plus you will need to replace that cat too b/c of all the unburnt fuel builed up a clog....

i'm in the process of fixing the same problems.

i got codes however.

I ask if you have washed the engine bay recently because mine was doing the same thing a few months ago and I swore up and down it was the coil packs or spark plus and wires. Bought new coils put them in and it was doing the same thing. Before I changed my plugs my dad asked if it might be something wrong with my pcm. I said no thats impossible and totally not likely. I started changing the plugs and he pulled off the PCM terminals and there was corrision in there from me washing it the week before. Cleaned them with electrical contact cleaner and put them back before I took out any plugs and it ran perfect. Just something to think about...

I have to second the ignition problem. Ignition problems can be intermittent. If you had a clogged cat or fuel problem, the problem would be there all the time. Buy a spark tester. Its a spark plug with a clip on it. Check each wire and see if your getting a spark. If one coil is not giving a spark, then swap the coil packs around to make sure its just that one coil that is bad. I did that on my car and then two coils were not working. I switched them back and it was only the one coil. This told me my ignition module was bad along with one coil. Also, check the resistence in the plug wires and the gap in the spark plugs. Check a service manual for the correct resistence in each wire and gap for the plugs. If the miss is still there, you could have a bad sensor. I think the ignition is fired from a crank sensor, but I'm not sure.
