PRE98 & 98+ 3800 engine difference??

    PRE98 & 98+ 3800 engine difference??

    Hey all,
    I haven't been on the board in a while, but I'm glad its here to come back to.
    Anyway, I bought a 99 Firebird for my fiance about two months ago. So, Im technically a V6 owner again!

    Anyway, I have one quick question. I know one of the main drivetrain differences between the pre98 engines and the 98+ is the top intake manifold (the 98+ are a more straitforward design vs the pre98's are angled to the corner).

    Anyway, is that the only difference in the engine? Headbolt design, lower intake manifold.. are they interchangeable??

    the intake changes in '99. 98 and prior years are the same. '99 goes to the streight TB. '99+ also has tubular exhaust manifolds. Those are really the only major changes. All parts other then that are interchangeable as far as i know. There are other small things but nothing that makes much of a difference. PCM's are different for each year.

      and the 99 and up TB is electronic there is no cable NUmber of O2 sensors all internal parts can be inter chaged BUT the upper intake

        That is incorrect. 2000+ Got the Tublar Manifolds

          Hey Justin, good to hear from you. The ECM and wire pinouts changed for the 99 models. This was due to the fly by wire setup mentioned above. Everything below the upper intake is the same.

            Hey Michael! Great to hear from you too! Thanks for all the info guys. The reason I ask is because I just picked up a good deal on a 96 3.8L engine that need rebuilding. Im going to set it in the back of my garage and as I ave cash see what I can make this engine do! Nice little project.

            Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

              You will be fine with that motor. I actually got a used 96 3.8 and just used the long block and bolted my intakes to it with no problems.
