  • Holden V6 Specifics

I have noticed that our aussie buddies have been running a similar version of the 3800 called the ECOTEC 3.8L, its installed as a base engine in all Holden vehicles too.

For some time now I have been doing research and really like the holden 3.8L and it seems extremely similar to our engines except for a few dicerning factors, the most important being head design.

I was intending on ordering a set of Holden RWD V6 headers for my car (CARB this!) but noticed the exhaust ports are placed slightly differently along each head. Since they have aftermarket heads that are relatively cheap, valvetrains, pistons, etc, I am wondering if they would work. Hell, they have an all aluminum 3800-II shortblock for $1K US Dollars, then just add in whatever componentry you want!

If this really leads to something more, that would be great, but I need some help on finding information out about the differences between our V6s and the Holdens. I have a few links and I will post them for you guys below:

http://www.castleauto.com.au/headers.htm (these guys have headers for the holdens, cheap too)

I think this will open up our options a lot when it comes to the US. The only problem w/ aluminum blocks is their strength over the long haul. aluminum distorts more than iron does when heated, and if you have aluminum heads and block, they may lead to sealing issues later on. If the block is properly reinforced, then I may look into some of this stuff. Hell, maybe I was just early in thinking GM makes aluminum heads for our engines! The good thing about all of this is more options for us, as well as much better performance in drag and road racing since the one thing that weighs the most in our cars is the engine and heads. we'll be much lighter than ls1's since we'll use less aluminum than they do, meaning we'll be quicker and since octane requirement is based on vehicle load, we'll be able to tweak and tune our cars for a little more power.

Well I am not fond of aluminum, I am just saying its interesting they happen to make one that works - it is not made by GM however.

The Holden V6 is 100% Iron, and thats the way I personally like it :D

This has my attention now, those headers are nice, I wonder how much of the holden and ecotech stuff is interchangable with our 3800 series 2? It would be nice to have more information on this, Where did you find the aluminum short block?

Those headers are only $215!
Someone needs to figure out if those will fit!! I couldn't imagine the holden 3800 being a different block than the buick 3800 series II. More than likely Holden gets them from GM. That Monaro CV6 is probably just the L67 with a fancy plastic covering(little changes here and there too) My 2 cents

Yes, cheap aren't they? Beautiful aren't they?

Problem: From what I can tell the exhaust ports on the holden V6 are not quite in the same symmetric locations as ours (maybe I'm wrong?).

                    Solution: Run Holden V6 heads.

Your right, the headers will not fit. All our ports are the same distance appart. They look similar to 4.3 headers because on one side, the single tube is in the front and the other side it is in the back. The flange hole are not right for either engine.

I know, thats why I say they most likely get most of their parts from GM. I would think since at least their heads are different, they don't get all their parts from GM. Sorry for the confusion.

yes, someone needs to do that, you may also have to run a holden cam,as the intake and exhaust lobes may be in different spots for there heads

also those headers may have clearance issuse with the k-member(among other things)

Assuming the headers do hook up in the exhaust ports, aren't there jsut going to be problmes actually hooking them up in an F-body, differnt body and everything.

The body of a holden is significalntly different.

Either way, I was thinking about this the other day the CV6 is supposed to be pushing 280HP.

I was wondering how supercharger is set up on that car too, its RWD, so it can't be a GTP setup. We may have hood clearance issures but who car, get a 4in. cowl. maybe some L67 internals or other aftermarket parts into it and add a little more boost.

Actually to save trouble, seems we should be able to swap a CV6 motor into an F-body with semi little modification.
