  • 3.1L to 3.8L swap?

well, guess I'll start out my first post by telling you a bit about my car...It's a 1992(3rdGen)Camaro RS w/T-Tops, it came from the factory with the beastly 3.1L V6, automatic 700R4, and 10bolt 3.23 gears.

Anyways, this car is my project/daily driver, and I'm looking to get some more power out of it, but stay V6 for insurance and fuel economy reasons, and I've gotta use an engine from the same year or newer car to satisfy emissions testing...I don't think I'd be happy with the 3.4L swap which seems to be pretty common/easy to do..so the next obvious step-up is the 3800 seriesII Engines that came in the 95.5-2002 4thgen camaros...people tell me that since it's a 90* engine it would be just as hard to swap in a V8, this does not bother me, but this seems to be the reason why no one has yet to do this swap (that I know of). so it may be a bit more expensive to swap in, and the benefit won't be quite as great, but the insurance/gas savings over a V8 would easily be worth it in my opinion, not to mention you can get the 3.8L for next to nothing(when compared to am L98/LT1/LS1). Sure I could just sell this car and buy a V8 car or a 4thgen 3.8, but where would be the fun in that? I mean this is my project car after all ;)

So finally I ask my question, aside from a different transmission(60* tranny won't bolt up), what else should I need or expect in doing this swap?

All information you have that pertains to this swap would be appreciated, Thanks! :D

I don't think the insurance company need to know that you switched to a V8 ;)

your tranny will fit the the 3800II (it uses a 60* bellhousing pattern) the hardest part would be fabing motor mounts and installing the 3800's engine wireing harness

I would like to see this done... it would be unique, so would a 4.3 v6 in an f-body

but DEQ (emissions testing) does, I dont know if I could keep the two seperate, and I'm pretty sure the insurance company would consider that insurance fraud...I guess whatever works as long as you don't get caught  , just dont expect them to pay for anything when you get in a wreck and figure it out..

really? I've heard everything from it uses the BOP pattern, to 90*, and now I hear 60* (although I think the people on this board would know better than the others), the thing is, I'm still gonna need a new transmission because I doubt this one will hold up to the 3800's power...can anyone verify the bellhousing pattern? Now the wiring harness shouldn't be too tough, I've seen the 3.4L SFI swapped into a 2.8L MPFI car, and I know a few people that can help me get that done with..

yeah, thats what I was thinking...

the tranny should hold up just fine, its the same basic tranny that the 3.8 uses.... but ya may have to swap trannes, as the 3.8 dosn't have a provision for a kickdown cable....

or ya could convert your car to a 5 speed ;)

oh and and in the late 80's gm desided that all fwd motors shall use the 60* v6 bellhousing pattern, so you could alsp swap motors like the quad4 ,olds aurora, caddy northstar, caddy shortstar, etc

sounds like I should get the transmission and the engine as a combo from the same car...so far this sounds fairly easy, I wonder why no one has done it yet?

I'm "tentitively" going to do this too, just don't know how the motor mount brckets will work. Somebody please post pics of the 3800 motor mount brackets. The 3.4 brackets have the same bolt patern as the 2.8/3.1 engines, but are about 5" to long.
