I test drove a cherokee once and it was reading about 120 oil pressure. I got out and checked and had atleast 2 extra quarts in the thing. I'm lucky it didnt blow out every gasket in the engine....

It should be ok i had it done at "Time it" oil change chain down here. Its been doing it for two oil changes now and i am running penzoil synthetic 10W30... I also smell oil burning as of a while but saw a puff of smoke out of the drivers side of the hood for a sec then it stopped :( my babies dying wahhhhhhhhhhhh

Originally posted by blacksport: Well go check your oil level, most of the people that work at those places are idiots and know nothing about cars....
exactly
I've seen two cars leave a jiffy lube without oil in them
my truck came out of AAMCO with less than half the fluid, burnt the crap out of the tranny two miles down the road
took 2 months and a call to the better business bureau to get a rebuild at thiee cost
most of the people at these places are just high school kids listening to the head honcho.
if you ever sit there and watch them work you'd be amazed at how many times you hear them turn around and say "how many quarts for this one? and this one? how about that one?"
its disturbing.
change your oil yourself, it only takes 10 minutes.

The oil pressure will drop down below its normal number at idle when the motor is turning below idle speed, sometimes pretty significantly. Say if you let the clutch out too quickly in 1st gear without giving enough gas [almost stalling the car], I notice the oil pressure drop sharply for a fraction of a second. I think the minimum specification I've seen is 60psi @ 1850rpm, and it doesn't mention a number at idle. Also realize that once the oil gets hot, the pressure gauge will read lower at idle than when the motor is cold. For my car it's a difference of 5-10 psi at idle depending on how hard I'm driving it. The only other thing I wonder is if your oil is newish or has a few thousand miles on it, as I've heard oil viscosity breaks down with mileage and may result in the oil being a little too thin when hot, decreasing the pressure reading.
basically your oil pump puts out so much at oil at so and so RPM. at idle is is not putting out much there fore your pressure is low. at crusing speed it is up to around "normal". and with very high RPM's it is cycling as much oil as it possibly can resulting in very high pressure
Update again: Did some snooping under the hood and looks like my drivers side head gasket might be leaking a lil oil but not much just has oil residue around the gasket area. Oil levels are perfectly on the line. I will change the gasket but am wondering if the gasket leak is caused from the high oil press. in which case I need to fix that first. I am curious as to what would cause my oil pressure to Peg when driving in any gear or almost any rpm except idle and hard acceleration?? i am confused =(

O and i don't change my oil anymore after it wouldn't clear any of the lift at the base hobby shop because of the lowering springs and gfx i can only drive over a hole in the ground oil change place and that barely makes it.

go to an auto parts store and buy a low profile jack and some stands. depending on how low it is you may need some small blocks of wood or bricks to drive up on. I haft to do that too.
