There was a topic about this recently. It is illegal to do an engine swap in California.Black 2002 Camaro M5-SS takeoff muffler, B&M Ripper, K&N Filter, 35/20% tint, Infinity speakers, Viper alarm, perpetually breaking clutch return spring mod. 15.49@90.15
Pewter 2002 Firebird M5 (Dad\'s Car)

No it isn't! As long as you leave all the original smog units locked by law...eg cat converter! which BTW has to be OBD2 compliant, the transaxle might be questionable...but I will try calling CARB. NB: not a referee, but the originators and @sswipes who passed this 60's law and see what they want, each car is different...which creates a grey area. I think with an F-body it is much easier because the car came with 8 cylinders which were also mated to autos or manuals (tranny) respectively...THE ORIGINAL 3800SII turbo...NOW SERIES-III

but the VIN won't match for a 5.7L V8, and I do live in California...the biggest #$^%&! for all laws dealing with cars...specially smog!!!! I hate this place hehCar: 1995 Camaro 3.4L V6
Mods: K&N FIPK,3 IN. umm.. dood..
<sigh> will you have some kind of patience??? anyway. as for swapping in a v8, yes you can in CA provided:
a)its in the same weight class as your car (means that the donor car has to weigh the same)
b)you need all the stock emissions equipment on the car with the v8, and functional from the donor car
c)you get all the emissions stickers from the donor car to your car (this is what CA requires, kinda stupid imo)
d)if its an LS1, you CANNOT get it from a vette. has to be a F-body cause the y-body is allowed less restrictions than the f-body. but.. im not sure how they'd be able to tell, other than accessory placement, but then again, you could fix that too and make it look like a f-body engine..i dunno.
those are just the requirements when i asked once about going all the way and putting a 502 in my fbody (hey if im gonna spend that much time and trouble i want something unique LOL)
anyway...whatever you decide, good luck.

hehe thanks Russ, I'm still tryin to convince my parents to get me a new car, I'm just really scared that no matter how much we fix the 6 something else will break
plus it will save me money on painting the white one black

do they also do an under hood check? The origonator of the 2.8-3.4 swp boogie kept all the 85 intake/emissions on it to keep the stock look, otherwise he would need to speed $300 for a smog nazi referee to check the car for legality before it could be smog compliant. looking at this in a parent's perspective, you ain't gettin' a V8 boy.
so you want two extra cylinders for reliability issues? there is essentially 2 more of everything that could go wrong. everyone knows the LT1s lovely optispark should be shot.
it would cost you about $600-$700 for a relatively new takeout 3.8. it would cost you close to $4000 for a complete swap.
tell us what you're really after.

hehe, it just seems sometimes that the 6's have more probs, and yes LT1's and their optispark and LS1's with the PCV, and honestly..I just want a new car period. and I figure, if I'm gonna spend the money already why not get a Z28?Car: 1995 Camaro 3.4L V6
Mods: K&N FIPK,3 IN. You can only swap in a LT1 into a 3.4L car.....and a LT1 or LS1 into a 3.8L car depending on model year.
It is cause the LT1 was an available factory optioned engine for the 3.4L model year cars.
ALL FACTORY smog equipment must be on the car as if like it was built by GM with all the stuff.
As for the VIN number...that has nothing to do with it. Getting a V8 numbered VIN would actually be FRAUD...and illegal as hell.
Just do the swap with all the stuff (cats, air pumps, etc)....and you'll be fine.Max
\'95 Camaro V6..BB Triflo quad-tip catback, 180 degree Themostat, WaterWetter, K&N Air Filter, AC Delco Rapidfire Spark plugs, TB-Bypass, BMR Chrome-Moly STB, Front & Rear 1LE Sway Bars, 255/50/16 Eagle GS-C & F1 Steel, Dark Tinted Windows. 17.82 @76.101mph 2hp/5ft-lbs. :The Home Page
\'99.5 F-250 SuperDuty CrewCab, PowerStroke Diesel, 2wd, Torreador Red, TS Perfomance \"Insane\" Chip, BTS Tranny & Triple Disc Converter, Maddog Stage 2 Injectors, Holset H2E Turbo (36+ Psi), Detroit Locker, 33x12.5x17 Pro-Comp A/T on Eagle 118 17x8 Chrome wheels ......13.98@101mph.
Your resident California Licensed Smog Tech. :)
