Saw somebody quote Magnus about the DIS-4 and MAF+

It was over in the For Sale area where somebody stated, "according to magnus the maft+ is way better and is cheaper".
Now bluecmaro96 I questioning if you have a clue what your talking about. Did Magnus actually say this? The MSD DIS-4 makes your spark plug spark stronger and multiple times and helps low end hp with a net of .2 in the quarter but only adds 1hp peak. The MAF+ is a tunning tool right? Not sure how it works really but it doesn't have anything to do with the power going to the spark plug right?
I believe that Magnus actually said this about all of the chips that are on the market for our car. Heck, could probably be a statement extended to all chips for all cars other than turbo cars where they allow the car more boost.

So anyways, I'm curious because I really don't know what exactly the MAF+ does. Can somebody sum it up for me.

The other thing, did he/you actually say this because I'm looking to get the MSD DIS-4 and want to know.

MAFT+ adjusts base and WOT to rich or lean. You can set it either way. Take it to the track and experiment with it. It also adjusts timing advance. DIS 4 didn't give any gains NA. Maybe the spark is already strong enough and any stronger is useless.

Personally I would buy the MAFT+ first. It's definitely going to help. DIS 4, who knows.

So DOM, your saying that the modifications review is wrong? They tested a few cars and got .2 average gain from the MSD DIS-4. I don't have either yet but was thinking of getting one.

Ok, I reread the Modifications Encyclopidia, it was only one car. "The first three test runs were conducted to create a benchmark ET. With the DIS-4 in bypass mode an average ET of 15.4 was measured.
The second groups of three test runs were conducted with the DIS-4 in line; operational and configured in default mode as shown in the option switches section of this report."

I actually thought that this was written back when Bill Spano had a 3.4 Camaro back before this site was made. Maybe back when we were all on V6fbody.com. So DOM, your saying other cars haven't found this to be true N/A?

Bill never had a 3.4, he has a 3.8. You maybe thinking of Tim (SoSlow). He did pick up some extra ET on the 3.4. Bill also did find some ET but both of these men were heavily modified cars.

Oh wow, not sure why I got those mixed up. Bill's the show car guy that recomended that other stuff in a bucket when Mike Levy and everybody else swore that Zano was the ultimate. Actually now that I thought about it, was Bill one of the originals on V6fbody.com? I guess I didn't know his real name untill the whole Zano thing, oh well.

Let me clarify... This is definately one of the things that will be going in Magnus FAQ on my web page..

The DIS-4 and MAF T+ only have 1 thing in common.. they both can retard timing advance. This is useful if you want to run a power adder and want to pull back some timing. I and Mike Huff however think the MAF T+ retard options give the user a little more flexability.

The DIS-4 is also useful for a tach output. This allows the use of the MSD Window Switch. I have read though that MSD makes an adapter that allows us to use the window switch without a DIS-4 interface. I believe it costs around $40.

The DIS-4 supposedly produces a stronger hotter spark. But how stronger and hotter can a spark get? The 3.8 ignition system is SUPERB! Our coil packs are probably one of the strongest ignitors out there. The ONLY ignition upgrades that we really need for most applications (even mine) is plugs and wires.. THATS IT. Our ignition systems (on the 3.8) rock!

The 3.4 is a different story. The DIS-4 will DEFINATELY help the weaker ignition system of the 3.4. When I sold my DIS-4, I wouldn't sell it to a 3.8 owner.. I sold it to TealV6.. an 3.4 owner.

Bill Spano did his testing on his 97 3.8.. How he achieved those #'s I'm not really sure.. We did talk about it and he seemed to think it was because of the humidity... I however believe that perhaps he had a failing coil pack or something else wrong.

I had the DIS-4.. I tested it NA SEVERAL times at the track.. many different occasions in the cold and hot and humid weather.. I netted ZERO gain.. No ET or MPH increases... MPH is where you look to see if you are making more HP.

My track results are solid.

I don't think the DIS-4 would gain anything on a power adder car either (3.8 application). As I mentioned before, our ignition systems are perfect from the factory.

I stand behind this... if you have a 3.8 and actually GAIN from the DIS-4 NA, then you need to look at your ignition system.. replace the plugs, put new wires on.. do your testing again. If you still gain then check the resistance on your coil packs.

As Mike Huff how much I was urging him to remove his DIS-4. ;)

As for the MAF T+.. This allows you to do 2 things... Adjust your Air/Fuel ratio and modify your timing advance.. It's a VERY useful tool when used with an autotap. You will gain more HP by using the MAF T+ and a little bit of know how than you will with a hypertech or jet chip.

One thing I don't like about the DIS-4 is that there are too many wires!!!!! It's a big PITA if you ask me. I eventually drilled a hole through my firewall and mounted the DIS-4 under the driver seat.. It was SO damn trick. I was pretty upset that I did all that work to make it look good and then ended up removing it.. Oh well.

I dont' know what teh difference between 3.4 and 3.8 igns are, both are teh same distributorless, use the same coil packs, and probably the same ign module, so what changed?

Oh yeah, Keith tells me all the time to remove that MSD. I'm on my 3rd one, blew 2 of them up using those Accel coil packs. I haven't had any problems with this 3rd one and stock coil packs. It runs my shift light and my nitrous window switch. Performance gains with it are questionable. I need to do some testing with the blower.

On retarding timing, it only retards above 4K. IMHO that is useless. With nitrous or a blower you want to retard across the board. So the MAFT+ does a better job of that.

I agree with Keith, the MSD is not worth the $$ or the hassle to install it. Get a MAFT+ and if you need a tach signal for nitrous or a shift light buy that adaptor MSD sells.

I agree with Keith and have believed it for some time. I never really could see how it would benefit a NA car with our ignition systems. I can usually run .045 to .050 plug gaps at around 12psi and running pretty rich with O2's is the 910-930mV range without misfires. The MAFT+ is much more useful and the gains are greater.
