  • Valve Spring and head rebuild question

I recently picked up my new heads (ported and polished) from the machine shop. I ordered new valve springs, retainers and valve locks from CompCams. My questions is this: Will the new retainers come with the caps that go over the exhaust valve springs like the setup on the stock 3.4L valvetrain or just the disc-style retainers? If they DO NOT come with the caps, should I reuse the stock caps or do without?

Can I ask how much the P&P job set you back? How long did it take?

Lower Intake manifold P&P was $125.
Head work was $569, but inculdes a lot of stuff:
        Stage 3 Competition P&P,
        polished combustion chamber,
        match port heads to intake,
        match port heads to headers,
        5-angle valve job,
        before and after flow charts.

It may sound like a lot, but there was a lot of time put into them. It took about a week and a half from when I dropped them off to when I picked them up.

700 bucks for all that is not bad, when I was thinking about getting some internal engine work, 125 for the P&Pd intake was the lowest price I found, but it was from Josh (Viper98885) and just to get the heads P&Pd from a shop around here was 400 bucks... 3 angle valve job was 140!!!
I didnt do any of it b/c of the money and that my car was basically unmodded and doing that would be something to do after some other mods were done...

Im sorry to tell you, your goal of 200 hp to the flywheel with those minimal mods wont happen.

For those of you who would like an update...
The CompCams retainers will not work with the exhaust retainer caps so don't use them (the stock caps...definitely use the Comp retainers). I finished the assembly of the heads and now I am waiting for the head studs and then they will be installed on the car. I will be hitting the dyno after the heads are on for those interested.

yeah I was actually talking to Viper98885 about this very issue =P and he mentioned that you (tiago) didnt get anywhere close to 200 w/ even more mods than I listed... it was quite disappointing... he said I'd def need headers to get that high, but since they are on the backorder from hell, Im waiting whether I decide I want them or not =)

Im hoping I'll get close tho... I may use the money for the driveshaft to do something else that will increase hp, but I dunno yet... I dont want to take my engine all apart again so I may not do the rocker arms...
I dunno, Im frustrated... open to ideas tho

I was only making 155 rwhp without headers and a MSD ignittion and had some tuning problems, now Im making more like 170ish rwhp after ehaders, and msd, the headers really let the heads breathe alot better.

to reach 200 flywheel you're gonna need at least full intake, exaust, and head work.
