  • 3.4 to a 3.8

how hard would it be to switch out a 3.4 to a 3.8 in a 95 firebird? blown head gaskets and an auto tranny that looks like it is about to go to the big junkyard in the sky in about 10 to 15 thousand miles. was told it would be bout the same cost to replace the engine and i figured why not beef up by 40 horses in the proccess.

Gonna take just as much work as putting in a V8. If you're gonna do a swap, don't waste money on another V6.

It's actually harder to put a 3.8 in than an LT1.

It is hard to do the v6 to bigger v6 swap.
You will need a wrecked 3.8 car to get all the parts form, that will be the main thing you will need.
It is a good idea to build a mean 3.4L

also, having done a 3.4~3.8 swap (third gen style) the engien harness & pcm are probably gonna be the biigest problems. Also getting the 3.8 with the mounts & brackets, as they are soooooooooo different from the 3.4.

I did the swap in my 94. You're biggest issue will be the fact that your 95 is not OBDII and all the 3.8's were(cept maybe the 2nd half of 95's). I ended up swapping in the entire chassis harness to make life a little easier. I ended up turbocharging mine, so it wasn't a big deal as far as power for me, but looking back I would've done an LT1. Not because of ease, just because I like v8 N/A power. It's really not that hard of a swap if you take your time and plan it out. If you have any questions drop me an IM at ataris1618. Its all still very fresh in the memory. I also did the auto to manual swap at the same time....

                    Yeah, we'd say get your *** to LS1tech.com ;)

Search for the V8 swap...get the motor from a yard, ebay, etc.

I think you'd be better off

1)Rebuilding the 3.4 and making it stout (even if that means the 3.4 runs high 14's, but remember the 3.4 runs high 16's stock).

2)Just fixing the car to where it runs decent, and being happy with a 6

3)Junk it for an 8 already.
