  • Car won't start after Pulleys installed

after putting my car back together from installing underdrive pulleys, it won't start. Both the battery and alternator are finr (were tested), and when i turn the key, i hear the hum of the ignition, but no tick, or nething from the starter, although the starter was fine previously. I used a crowbar to stabilize the flywheel, and am afraid that i jamed that up or seized it. PLease help asap!

...one more thing, is it bad for the flywheel to have turned in the process of removing the pulley? could that lock it up. when i try starting the car, should the flywheel turn if the starter enguages?

if the starter turns, the flywheel turns, they go hand in hand. from what it sounds, you messed something up w/ the flywheel/starter gear assembley. try removing and reinstalling the starter (not too hard at all) and see if that fixes it. your gear may be off somehow, or the starter itself may be totally shot (could just be coincedence).

when you take the starter off, have a friend hold it TIGHT, and crank the car once and see if the starter output shaft spins at all. if it doesnt, its a bad starter, if it does, reinstall it and see if it cranks the engine. if still nothing, its the flywheel somehow, but i dont know how.

sounds like your starter just isnt getting power somehow tho, cause it doesnt even tick. do you have a multimeter to check it w/ the ign. on?

if its the flywheel, how much of a PITA is that to fix? also, if somehow i jamed it up (the wheel) too far, can i tap it down???

honestly, ive never taken a flywheel off before, so i cant tell you that much.

id put my money on the starter. if there is no even clicking noise on the starter, im guessin its not gettin current. check it with a multimeter.

The flywheel turns continously when the engine turns, so you should be ok there.

Did anybody bump into a starter connection with a tool while they were down there and blow a fuse maybe?

I will check the all the fuese l8r, Also, so if i turned the flywheel counterclockwise by accident, instead of clockwise, does that matter?

WTF did you replace? If you're a 3.8, then you only did the WP and Alt, which shouldn't mess up anything.

If you're a 3.4, then you maybe did the crank pulley as well. Not sure why everything wouldn't just line back up ... ?

He's got a 3.4 but I don't understand why he tinkered w/ the starter if there's no need to with a pulley install.

Won't matter... Something else happened during the install. Probably something electrical. A connector is off, or a fuse shot. Check any wiring harness connections in the area you were working.

Oh, and check this one obvious thing too, make sure the car is definitely in park all the way if it's an automatic.
