  • Can the entire 3.4 Engine be built outside the car and then put it

basically can i build the whole thing on the stand, and then put it in. i have the radiator and just about everything out of the car now. i though it might be hard getting the tranny bolts on. your thoughts please?

yea. just put the tranny on after you get it in the car. take it in / out thru the hood. ive done it. doesnt take that long.

i went from under the car when i did my swap. i even pulled hte old motor the same way.
its the easiest way and the most used way on these cars theyd ont give u much room to pull form up top.

I put the tranny on and put it all back in through the top. The headers were the only thing that I waited on bolting on until after it was back in the car.

so if i build the whole thing outside, then i have to pull the tranny? is there any chance of leaving the tranny in and connecting it to the whole motor? if not, guess i better pull the tranny

well yea, you dont have to pull the tranny out, just gotta make sure its off the motor and supported by something in the meantime (there will be nothing to support the front of it)

other than that, should be no prob to leave it in there while you fix the engine.

UM how can u go through the hood if uc ant lift the car how u gunna lift the engine. i used a engine hoist to lift my car it worked jsut fine. just jack the rear end up. about 1 ft off the ground hook the hoist up to the radiator support. jack it up. about 3 ft and u can get it right under the car.

i have and engine hoist, i just dont want to use it to lift the car. Ive already started taking the radiatior, and a/c condencer. the wires are alost done. it looks as if their is enough room to get it out so far.

i took the whole tranny and motor out at the same time and i plan on putting it all back in the same way. the only thing i had to do was take the upper intake off for the oil pan to fit over the crossmember.

i took my engine out thru the hood. put it back in that way too after i put the aluminum heads on it and rebuilt it.

Not sure how different a 3.4 would be, but i pulled my ls1 and transmission out through the top. i dont see how the 3.4 would be any harder (i would think easier).

I did have to pull my heads/intake manifold though. but i left my radiator in.

Things are a lot easier if you remove the engine and tranny at the same time. I don't know about lifting the car by the radiator support...doesn't sound like a great idea to me. Just unbolt the mounts and remove from the top. Most likely, you will have to remove everything down to the heads to get clearance to remove it from the top. You might even have to remove the heads. Not a tough job though.
