Yet another neophyte shopping for a cam

My camaro is the only car I have, and I won't be able to afford a second car for a while. I have to drive it to work and school everyday, in extreme hot and cold weather. The engine has 58k miles on it, and it will probably get 110k before I get a better car.

I probably shouldn't get a big cam at all since my car needs to be reliable, but I can't ever leave anything alone.

Will this grind from ZZPerf. give me years of reliable, fast service:

206°/216° at .050"
Intake Lift .315" (.504" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)
Exhaust Lift .315" (.504" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)
115 Lobe Separation

That is the VS cam and while it will work it is TERRIBLE for n/a use. The only reason I know this is my buddy Mike Malloy owned one and I actually rode in the car with it. His n/a times weren't really any better than stock, actually.

If you need a good cam, thats mild and works well, I can't help but recommend the 200/206 grind that comp themselves make. Its well made, good ramp rate, not too high a lift, and has good gains with the 112LS. I recommend ordering it with a 113 IC though, and not 108 like it is stock. The 108 will make it more powerful in the low end, but with such a small duration it doesn't harm anything to give it more high-end and sacrifice a little [img]smile.gif[/img]

I know we all want the best cam for our cars, but you gotta figure out what you can live with. I think the LAST thing you should do is a cam, as it will change the entire demeanor of your car. If its a daily driver, wait until you can get something which you can drive just in case the cam install goes sour. Don't put yourself in a hurt locker when everything is still working fine, try to be prepared for anything.

Make sure you're ready for a cam by having everything else you want done and straightened out... exhaust, intake, headers, thermo, radiator, suspension, appearance, anything [img]smile.gif[/img]

Just some advice. I know its more than you asked for, but I hope it helps.

I forgot to mention I have a manual trans. I think that makes a big difference in cam selection.

If I did buy this cam that dominic recomends, can anyone guess which of my valvetrain parts would fail down the road? I used to drive a monte carlo with a 350 and broken valve springs, it ran ok as long as i didn't race it.

comp's grind will work well for you or look at intense's grind. intense flow tested 20 different sets of heads to come up with a cam that would maximize power while still being perfectly streetable and work with the stock computer.

I went to Seppos website. He doesn't have many mods beside the cam. I would like to talk to him and find out if he daily drives his GT cam camaro. If so, his cam is the shiznit and I will have to get one.

Jam- thanks for recalling that thread. This GT cam fits in the profile outlined in that discussion, but it is a little on the small side. I think it would be better on the small side though since I don't want to reprogram my computer.
