I'm looking to buy a cam that gives me a good noticeable power gain, lopey idle and better sound in general, and i'm not looking to spend a lot or mod all kinds of parts in my engine. I've heard that the comp cams gt cam (NOT THE GT2 CAM) can be used with pretty much all stock engine parts. Is that true? If i got the gt cam, what parts would i need to upgrade?

I found 10 threads with "GT Cam" in the title alone. Perhaps you should try searching?Matt

I did search, none of those answer my question. I'm trying to figure out if the gt cam is a good cam to buy if youre not looking to spend a lot/buy many new engine parts and still get good sound and power gains. Also is it possible to use it with mostly stock engine parts that would have to be changed with other cams?\'02 W68 Pewter Metallic Firebird-RKSport Headers, Catco 3\" cat, SLP Loudmouth, Fast Toys ram air, K&N, !Air Silencer, shaved airbox lid, SLP fan switch, BMR strut tower brace

what the f... this has all been talked about.
aight, they say you can run a cam with decent lift and duration like the GT with stock components but once you start raising your rev limiter to take full advantage of your power band you're going to run into valve float.
to combat that you want to upgrade to tighter springs... which lead to stronger retainers. now, with those, you run the possibility of bending or breaking a pushrod, so you get hardened pushrods and probably new lifters because it would suck to have a lifter go down after you've had the motor almost totally apart. at the same time you can't neglect your rocker studs because they are only able to stretch/compress a certain amount before your timing gets messed up, so you get new rocker studs.
that's all fine and good, but your timing chain is stretched from who knows how many miles and the tensioner is worn, so you replace those. you will also need a new gasket set.
you will still need to buy a valve spring compressor, pulley puller, compressed air chuck, magnet, oil, drinks, etc...
that's why people spend so much dough when they upgrade valvetrain stuff.

What is the rev limiter on a 3.8L anyway?
I want to run the comp cam xtreme energy stage 2, but I don't want to have to throw all that money into stuff. Would it hurt anything to just run the cam and slightly stiffer valve springs (and not raise the limiter)?2005 Ford Focus ZX3 SE D20 M5 - Modified ;) http://www.knightenmotorsports.com
[ U R L = h t t p : / / w w w . g e o c i t i e s . c o m / h e a r t l a n d _ h e a t _ v 6 ] Heartland Heat V6 [ / U R L ]

it won't hurt to keep the stock rev limiter, you just won't be able to get to all the power you have.

If it is at or right around 6k (i'm an A4) then it will be fine for this cam, i think. We ran it on desktop dyno and i think the max hp was at like 5400-5600rpm. After that is was starved for air.2005 Ford Focus ZX3 SE D20 M5 - Modified ;) http://www.knightenmotorsports.com
[ U R L = h t t p : / / w w w . g e o c i t i e s . c o m / h e a r t l a n d _ h e a t _ v 6 ] Heartland Heat V6 [ / U R L ]

5950 is the revlimiter
with the stage 2 cam from COMP you have to put the 130# springs in and i would do the "OE" lifters as well while your in there
this should let you put the rev limiter to like 6500 RPMwww.turbov6camaro.com

A member in our local GP club put a GT2 cam in his GT. He used 90 pound springs with no problem. Ran 14.3 with some other work.

Gotta remember, we are FWD Grand Prixs. That was good enough to throw him into the top 5 running GTs.
