  • Having some weird problems...

Okay fellas, help me out here.
About 3 weeks ago, I am cruising down the road (holding the pedal constant) the car starts surging like someone was pressing and releasing the gas (but I wasn't) and the SES light comes on.
Got it scanned, it says Throttle position sensor error.
Replaced TPS. Works ok, no SES light for about 2 weeks, then yesterday I leave the house and the car revs by itself to 2K rpms and stays there, no matter what I do. I drive to the store and the car is surging the whole way. By the time I get to the parking lot, it revs to 3K rpms and stays.

I checked the TB and the throttle is not getting stuck. I dunno what is up with this pile lately.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I know general repair goes in gen tech, but this is beyond general repair. I think it might take some advanced tech help.

no SES? are you able to crack the throttle by hand?

make sure all your vacuum connections are tight... seems like yet ANOTHER TPS issue. i have the same problem with my ICM.

Yeah I can move the throttle by hand.
It does have an SES again for TPS. I am going to get the new TPS sensor tested. The wiring seems ok. I dunno. Hopefully they didn't sell me a bad TPS.

Something tells me it won't be that easy.

Checked the reference volts from the clip that clips into the tps, it came up 5.02 volts, and my manual said it should have 5.0 volts. The wiring is ok.

Took the sensor to autozone, they checked it out, and I checked it out on their machine and it looked fine. Got a new one anyways.

Don't know. Can anything else trigger a TPS code?

Do you have the actual code number for the SES?

Can't remember. I will look. Had it scanned twice.
Both times the computer said tps sensor was bad, nothing else.

              I found the paper.

Here's the info out of the GM Service Manual. Looks like there's a few things that could trigger it: PCV, vacuum leak, EGR, etc.

Be sure to check your IAC valve, when mine went out on my old car, it had a steady, high idle (like 1500 RPM). But no code was ever set. They're expensive, so I got a couple at the junkyard to test. Once I confirmed that the IAC was the problem, then I bought a new one.

My problem is more intermittant. It has been stuck at as high as 3000 rpms. More frequently, 2000 rpms. I got another new TPS and I will try it.
Next I will try PCV. My EGR leaks a bit. Then IAC.
Any more ideas? Thanks to all you guys that replied. 98camaro3.8 that service manual is very helpful thanks.

I had a problem like that, and it was the way I put the sensor in. If you put it in the wrong way it will make the car rev. to 3000 rpm. When you put it in make sure the marks, either line up or behind the marker.(can't remember which one). But try it both ways.

Its weird because it only does it sometimes though.

My 99 has a fully electronic drive by wire throttle, and I was having the same problem a few months ago.

After a long computer diagnostic session, I got serious and pulled off the airlid. Much to my surprise, I found a 15mm deep socket wedged between the MAF and the throttle blade. The socket was holding the trottle open and causing the high idle/numerous idiot lights to illuminate in my dash.

The irony of the story: The malfuntion occured as I was driving to Sears to buy a 15mm deep socket because I couldn't find mine anywhere.

I know this isn't advanced tech, but I thought it was pretty funny.
