Alright i got a 180 thermostat and i was wondering what this about the drilling of the thermostat

drilling allows more water to flow. it also allows water to ALWAYS flow. the car will take longer to warm up. some people like a drilled thermo because there are less extreme temp changes as when a normal thermo finaly pops open on a NOW WARM car and water starts moving through the engine.
thermostarts are 'designed' at the factory allong with the entire cooling system. the cooling FLOW matches the radiator. If water moves TOO fast through a radiator it does not get a chance to cool down before it flows back into the egine. Some cars run HOTTER with no thermostat at all becuase the water is moving through the radiator too fast.

I remember a number of years ago on thirdgen.org there was a huge debate about water moving "too fast" through the system.
Explain high velocity water pumps then like those from Stewart? In theory, moving through the radiator too fast might be bad, but if its consistantly flowing with the fans on or the car moving, it won't make a difference.
When I put a high velocity water pump on my old 92 camaro with the SBC, it made a nice difference versus the stock.

yank the thermostat in a 67 383 barracuda and see how far down the road you get. [img]smile.gif[/img]
high velocity is still using the stock designed cooling system...(thermostat still blocking coolant even if it is open because it is taking up space in the jacket)
Some things just need to be tested first hand.

Why waste money on a 180 stat and what not if your gonna drill it. A drilled stat is a drilled stat, its a broke stat with a hole drilled in it. You can get the same results drilling the stock stat. I have contemplated throwing a stainless steel washer inplace of my stat for free flow but with some restriction for flow speed.
