  • 3.4 Comp Cam

I am interested in the Comp 226* 236 exhaust .463 intake, .474 exhaust cam from fttp. It's the one josh sells from fttp. I would like to know everything about it, like idle, what tuing is needed, what gains you got from it, and what type of setup you have. would you reccomend this cam, or maybe something else??? i plan on running this with ported heads, intake, and custom lt1 throttle body intake and new 1.6 comp valvetrain w/ cloeys double timing chain. i am just nervous that i will rebuild my engine, and not like the performance or lack of possibly. i would like a nasty idle, but also wonder about whether the fuel injection can supply the cam sufficiently. thanks in advance!!!!!

id run the 3.4 dohc pistons in your car, like I have in the red camaro, to have the compression you'd need with that cam
I'd also get a set of 19# injectors and a afpr

i'td defanitly have a nasty idle

That is a bad @$$ cam, but can you engine make good use of it?
You will need a power full ignition.
You will have to raise compression, you should add that to your list.
That cam is to big even for me. I have different goals, hehehe.
You will need a set up like I have for my heads on my cardomain site but you need to machine you heads a bit more that I did to handel the lift.
Fuel injection can handel that cam.

would my stock compression not handle the cam, also how much were your pistons, rings, and connecting rods/ where can i get them/ how much bore is on your motor?(although i just may have mine ground to fit new pistons) i thought 19# would run too rich most people say, and deff the afpr!!!!!

is boring and larger pistons the only way to raise compression? should i maybe look at the crowers or crane powermax 2030, although it doesn't have a cam sensor tab, i have a 94 will that matter?????

nope,pistons.. your machine shop can get them for ya,or possably your local parts stores
            mine is 75mm over
with the big cam,tb, & high cr the 19# and afpr will be fine

talk to 94 teal about the crane 2030

also i wouldnt reccomend using iron heads with that cam no matter how much time you spend porting them.. the gen III heads will flow enough though, but that will introduce a whole new set of problems for the install

well i have podnered the gen 3 heads, but pretty much want to stay away due to too much custom work and other issues. i am having a very reputable shop here in N.Y. P&P everything, and they build super chevy motors. how much wolf did your pistons cost, and also where is good too buy, i was going to get the ross pistons .020 (or should i go .030) that fttp has for like 400 something and use the same connnecting rods. also flat or domed pistons. what if i do not want to tough the pistons, can someone reccomend a cam that will make my engine teardown worthwhile and provide a nice idle, yet not make me bore and get new cylinders.

You could get the crane 2-272-H cam like I have.
You woun't have to raise compressoin on a 3.4 and you can use it with out machineing your heads. If you pick your valve train parts right.
You will want to port your heads and intake with this cam.

well, i saw the hyperucinic pistons (i think thats what they are) @ jegs, and they are only like 34-39 dollars, can someone like you wolf tell me which ones i need, and if yu used ur stock connecting rods. basically, can you tell me a price for the pistons because i knwo the boring and balancing is 120. thanks. also, y are the significantly cheaper than ross, is it just the name?

speed pro part # h684cp.75,they'll give you ~ 9.7 to 1 cr, they use your stock rods

the ross pistons are forged and custom made... thats why they cost more

and if you spray a hyperucinic piston it will become a hypersplosive piston, whereas a forged piston will be fine

Hi i am running that cam its great makes good power idle is nice but at start-up its pretty wild. It chops and runs real nice. I had 24lb injectors in for my first run with this cam but it was way too rich. I put the stockers back in and its fine doesnt lean out or anything.I have the valve springs full roller 1.6 rocker arms on the intake and full roller 1.5 rocker arms on the exhaust. My heads are stock and it pulls hard i have ported iron and stock alum but im switching to alum heads in the future or im going to do the 3.8 swap and sell this motor... actually if you wanted to buy the motor with the cam in it and the rocker arms and headers and valvesprings and afpr i would sell it to you for a good price. Thanks.. also gas mileage is alright not great but it didnt change much from stock cam to this one. Only tuning you can do is with the fuel pressure really but i have fastchips custom tune for my old cam running it was done a couple years ago and now they dont do it anymore so im tuned but for a different cam... i would run this cam through the exhaust though because when i take the cap off my cutout and try to turn my ac on it sometimes stalls at first but slowly the computer adjusts for it and it is fine again. I was nervous about this cam at first but i just put it an and boom i love it. i just wish i would have done all this work to a 3.8 or a v8.. i have put lots of money into my car and i dunno its sweet.. but i guessi just want more.. maybe the only way to go is LS1 but who knows. I beat my friend in a Maxima SE with intake exhaust and a spec stage 3 clutch... i also took out a stock wrx... My setup is pretty simple 3800 stall fastchips computer tune, headers high flow cat 3in exhaust corvette style out back 3.73 gear with LSD ZR1's all around with 275's intake, cam, afpr, valve springs and full valvetrain along with split ratio rocker arms the trans has corvette servo with B&M trans pak and the electronic shift thing that sucks too, alum driveshaft and stock pistons injectors heads crank and all. Its 3.8 swap for me or going through everything on a 3.4 i have a spare block i might build too. sorry for the long reply but i actually have the cam in my car and can tell you what its like.. i do think higher compression would help although its not needed Hope this helped,

crank pistons rods and harmonic balancer are needed i believe and they balance them all together..... And putting the pistons together? do you mean putting the wrist pins in and putting them on the rods and all?.. I think they will need them to be together to balance.. not too sure... but they can for sure do it there no problem. Hope i helped,
