  • High compression/ stroker swap

hey guys, its about time for a rabuild for little johnny's car.... SO.... i think im gonna do a high compression setup. i want to keep it N/A, but i want some decent power, because i know these motors have potential. by the way.. its a 98 3.8L 5 speed. here are my plans... instead of pulling the engine and spending months w/o a car... which i am really doing now (im in college) i'm planning on buying an old 3.8 and rebuilding it. sound good? good. you guys think i should take one from a camaro or firebird... 98 above? i figure i can find one from a 98 camaro just to be safe. use the computer, etc.. from the old motor. i want to go with the L36 stroker kit from ZZP and do valves, springs, pistons all from 3800 performance. What cam do you reccommend. I want one i can use for a daily driver but get good power from it... a choppy idle is ok. with the stroker kit i'll be lookin at 10.2:1 ratio. what else do you guys reccommend to do with this swap... what else? any good websites for parts? and what route should i take with the heads? port and polish or get new ones through intense? thanx guys

sounds good but you may have trouble passing a smog test if they do it in your area.

talk to wickedsix9838, He does heads and will give you a good deal on COMPLETE heads, with a cam that will be ideal with the head flow numbers and P/P intakes to match.
Could you use the L32(series 3) connecting rods with the stroker kit? I would do that with some good pistons bearings and have the crank rods and pistons Cryo treated. Should be good to go. Good luck

well what you shouls do is find you a performance machine shop take your throttle body, heads, upper and lower intake manifolds, and have them ported and polish. on the heads make sure they do 3-angle valve job and bronze guide liners poli8sh the combustion chamber too the stock valves are fine if youre gonna run stock size new ones wont help anything at all unless they are karger in diameter. You cannot go much larger in diameter cause they are already pretty large. about that stroker kit the crank is just a reground from a stock l36 which i dont think i would trust too much cause of strength issues you run nitrous get fome forged if you go over 100 shot of nitrous. get a nice cam, springs retainers and keepers pushrods and lifters too total top end rebuil does great. BALANCE your stock crank, rods, and flywheel. dont get a stroker kit they are too weak for anything real high performance

oh yeah one more thing you are better off boring your block than stroking your crank on this paticular engine.

if im not mistaken the crank out of any 85 or older 3.8 has a stroke of 3.48 as opposed to our 3.4 stroke that might be a nice stroke.
