• Best Way to Rebuild a 3.8 L ...?

I want to rebuild my 3.8L Bird to handle between 400-500 hp, but i really don't know what i need and what is invovled. Is the www.supersixmotorsports.com Stage II rebuild kit be the thing i am looking for. What about aluminum heads etc. What i really want is some type of guide to follow to see exactly what i need for this project to be successful.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

well ummm you could search here and do alot of reading that would give you ideas but ill help you out

you will need forged pistons and rods.
You will be able to use the ones from a GTP you can buy them new from any GM dealership
heres a helpful webpage of what stefan did http://www.firebirdv6.com/projectvirus/engine.html

that should hold 500 hp im sure no one really really know because no one is putting that to the ground i know a gtp that put 430hp down to the ground so thats over 500 at the crank.

Aluminum heads is pointless to much money not enough gain.

The supersix pack is good that will help you make the HP you wanna make.

And are you looking into nitrous or a blower.
A blower i would get the GTP pistons.
Nitrous I would look heavly into getting custom forged pistons with a compression of maybe 10:1 (stock is 9.4:1 and the stp pistions are 8.5:1 Nitrous like compression blowers dont like compression)

That Stefan guy has a blower shortblock right?

So the GTP pistons and rods work with the 3.800 crankshaft? Is it the same crankshaft?

Not sure if anyone has aluminum heads that will bolt right onto the 3.8 motor.

I'd run forged pistons, but necessarily forged rods. How high do you plan to spin the motor?

Are you going to pulley it up for 15 lbs or something like that?

I'd get with a shop that really knows forced induction. You really want a shop that knows what types of rings you should run, ring gap etc.

Stefan has L67 pistons and rods.

The L36 and L67 have the same block, just different Rods and Pistons and Heads.

I REALLY like the idea of just swapping L67 parts in for lower compression in a blown application. They are already manufactured, and are cost effective.

Thrasher has put 15+ lbs of boost on GTP internals and have made over 500 HP... not too shabby.

GTP's with their FWD cars are able to hit 12.5's with a lot of boost.. and they are FWD cars...

I'd really like to turbo my car with L67 rods/pistons.

not too cost efficient. Stefan paid about $1000 for the pistons assemblies, but that was from a dealer. Although you won't find them at your local Discount Auto A set of custom piston assemblies will run ya around $600-$800. Check w/ Wieseco or JG

Ya i sometimes visit grand forks, ever visit the peg? sunday cruise nights on portage are pretty wicked...

anyways the supsersix pack is sounding better by the minute, i haven't heard any bad things from it, plus if it will allow the motor to handle over 400 hp without any problems....that is what i'm looking for...

what about cams and roller rockers? are the recommended in blown applications?

thanks for the help guys, it is appreciated.

How about the heads, are they iron? So they would bolt on since they have the same bolt holes and more importantly coolant passages? Very interesting.

Keith, you went with me that one time we saw that prototype GM setup on that black Firebird.... Interesting...

John, yes stock heads are iron.

The difference between the L67 and L36 heads on the 97 cars is L67's have injectors in the heads, where as on the L36 the Injector bos is not tapped.

I believe the heads on the newer L67's are differnet though but I am uncertain as to what has changed.

I remember that car very clearly... All I would have to do is change the lower intake, heads and add the blower. :D

I might do that,.. we'll see

GTP pistons are not forged, just the rods. There is a rumour that thrasher will be selling a forged set. If you are serious, I would give them a call. They probably would go ahead and sell them to you.

www.thrasher-ep.com

And the heads, it seems from '99 and up they use different castings. The earlier ones used the exact same casting, but they drilled the injector bosses, viola L67 heads. As far as differences, I don't think there is a difference between them that would matter. All of the rest of the engine parts haven't changed.
