  • using 2.8 mpfi on a 3.4

    New to the site,hope to get some reliable v6 60 swap information.I have a 86 camaro 2.8 mpfi that is converted over to 88 fiero engine management-now uses map instead of mas. The setup is for an engine swap into a british sports car. What I would like to do is implement what I have on a 3.4 v6 60. I need some help on determining what will interchange. Will my intake,distributor and exhaust manifolds bolt up to the early 90's camaro 3.4? Also what is the possibility of using the gm 3.4 replacement for the early(carb equipped)2.8.Would my intake and distributor bolt onto that engine also. Hope to find some knowledgable swap people here.Thanks

    dizzy & exhaust manifolds will work no prob. 3.4 long block would work best, swap over front cover & oil pan (depending on water pump rotation).

    The 3.4 block will work for teh earlier carb'd applications, but it doesn't have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. A tbi & inexpensive afpr should work jsut fine.

      you lost me on "dizzy".what do you mean by that? also a question about the comment on water pump rotation.Do the 3.4's have different water pump rotation than the 2.8's?.thanks

        dizzy = distributor

        also, my 85 2.8 water pump rotation was Clock wise (v-belt &serp belts) when I did the 3.4 swap, the water pump rotation on the the 3.4 was counter clock wise.

        The later yr 2.8's (full serp belt) may be ccw, along w/the 3.1 (I'll have to check on that).

          from your profile,it sounds like you are in country.been there in a previous "conflict". do you know if there is a way to identify the water pump rotation of the pump from the outside? i ask because my current 2.8 needed the water pump replaced and now i start to wonder if the rebuilt i got from the parts store rotates the right way.Thanks

            pic of my 3.4 when I was taking it out for the 3800 http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...325040_210.jpg

            as you cain see, the belt runs under the w/p pulley, making it run ccw. I kept all the accessories except for the a/c. I have the belt size used somewhere around here.

            The 85 had the belt goiong over top of the w/p pulley for the cw rotation.

            for the 86, here's a pic http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...18_19_full.jpg

            Looks like you have a cw rotatiting w/p. If you do get the 3.4, easiest, well maybe for you, might be to jsut swap front covers & keep all you accessories. add new w/p & timing chaing set.
