  • If you have a 96 I need your input

If it's not too much trouble for you to take your pcm out. It takes 5min. Can you either take a close up pic of the board or describe it in detail? I need to know:

    1. Is the board coated with clear plastic? You will know what I mean if it is.

    2. Tell me all the numbers on that flash chip. It's the one that says"intel flash" on it. A measurement of the chip will also help.

I also need to know the month and year that your car was made. It's on your door. Some were made in September of 95, but are classified as 96.

    Thanks for the input.

My chip seems to be totaly different from 97 chip. Just want to make sure it's for all 96s and not just the ones made in 95 like mine. It was very hard to remove and install again compared to the 97s. Also the code was much different.

            The reason is this....

Dom is a local friend of mine.. so he allowed me to read his PCM for my collection of information and to help with my project.

Well, all of his circuitry is covered with a small layer of silicone. If I recieve ANY PCM's that have this, I am sorry but it is too much of a PITA to work on them. Chances are only a few of the 95/96 models have this problem. I have read 3 97 PCM's and they do not have this problem.

The chip itself is also different which means more experimentation to figure out what is what.

The PCM did have the markings of a 95 PCM though so I figure its just a GM flaw during the OBD-I to OBD-II transfer.

Well if you read 3 97 pcm and they didnt have that problem and you say the chip from doms 96 is different than the 97 i hope not all 96 chips are different. do i have to take the 4 hex bolts out to see the numbers on the flash chip?, or is the numbers on the outside of the case?

You have to take the cover off. You want to look at the board and size of the chip also.

Dom, I have confirmed other 96 owners have the same PCM as you. Even with the gel/rubber coating.

So do this rule out the 96 PCM's from hopes of programming by magnus?

most likely yes.. its just too risky.

If the 97 PCM works on Dom's car, and you still wish for custom affordable programming by me, I suggest you buy a 97 PCM from a junk yard..

I might also stock some 97 PCM's for this very reason.

Hey, i don't blame you. I have no need for programming at the moment. I was just looking to help with the info on the 96's. How much would a PCM usually run from a junkyard?

Keep up the good work magnus. Seems like you are making some nice progress.

EDIT: I was just thinking of the changes that come to mind from 96 to 97 and, DRLs, guage cluster (digital odometer), and taillights were the few that came to mind that might have anything to do with the PCM and possible wiring changes. I am not sure at all how this would affect the PCM. These seem like very trivial things so i am not even sure if they deal with the PCM, but just some things that came to mind. I am sure you have already thought of these though. Good luck!
