  • EGR mod?

Has anyone thought of disconnecting the EGR, and installing a dummy unit that would sent the appropriate voltage to the computer, to avoid SES signals? Having no exhaust recirculating back into the intake would allow more space for fuel and air to pass through. I may do something like this for my Olds.

zzperf has an EGR blockoff plate which does not throw an SES.

what is the purpose of this? does it actually work on our cars? do you remove the entire egr system, hose and all?

Just leave the egr valve connected to the wiring harness, but no tubing to the intake or exhaust, and there is your dummy unit.

However, you will still get an SES. Something about the pcm expects to read a fluctuation in engine vacuum (or so I've heard) when it opens the egr, and if it doesn't see that blip on the vacuum reading, it will still set the SES.

That's my setup that I just described, and it does generate an SES light.

I really wanna avoid the SES light, so I may take readings of the EGR on my multi-meter, and try to duplicate them for the ECM somehow. Do you think you've gotten pretty good results from yours?

For the longest time I've had that little metal hose that goes from the drivers side header to egr broken. It split open one day so all I did was just fold it over itself and make it seal by the header.

I sometimes get a SES light for catalyst system below effeciency but other than that nothing.

            I wouldn't mind removing it.

It doesn't directly affect wide open throttle performance, because egr is not allowed to come on at wot anyway. It does cut down on soot buildup in the intake, and possibly on the valves.

Someone recently pointed out to me, that egr can allow more ignition timing just driving around town, so leaving it in might be better for mileage. (it lowers combustion temp a bit) Not having it, could lead to some minor knock retard, although I've never noticed any on my Camaro. I have noticed a little ping once in a while on my Passport after I unhooked the egr.

That's interesting. I may not bother with it now.
I was only interested in WOT hp. Dang! Another setback on my quest to improve my Series I.

I did it on my 99 bird but instead of buying the block off plate I measured the hole and spent like a dollar on a freeze plug from the parts store. to make it so you dont get a light you have to leave the pipe that goes to your intake manifold connected that way the vacume from the manifold draws air through the sensor. That way it thinks its still connected. also you might want to come up with a filter for the pipe so the air you draw in is filtered. what I did fir that was I picked up a breather filter thats goes in the valve cover of older cars cut the end of the pipe off to get rid of the flang and the piece that bolts it to the exhaust and made the hole in the filter a little bigger with a drill and just slipped it over the pipe and secured it with a hose clamp. My car has no emissions my cat is gone added o2 sim, bypassed pcv valve instead of going in to the intak it just vents out in to the, and the egr, 6,000 miles later no ses light. The pcv bypass was to keep the engine oil from getting in the intake manifold. If any one was wondering where the oil came from on the back of the butterfly.

Oh man, why didn't I think of that... That would eliminate the SES light! I still have the valve hanging in there... All I need to do is put that plate back on the bottom again, and run some kind of tubing back up to the intake.

Oh yeah, now I remember, I was thinking the valve might be expecting positive pressure from the exhaust side, so I didn't even bother to try. Sounds like it will work fine without having pressure on it though, so I am probably going to figure out a way to do this.

(I pretty much destroyed my metal tubing, but anything would work on normal temp air, even just some pcv hose or something...)

I learn something on here all the time... :)

I removed the whole egr system( tubes, mounts, sensor) a little while ago. The whole thing weighed in at about 5lbs.
At first I tried plugging the exhaust manifold with quick steel. That lasted about 20 mins. After a few other failed attempts to seal it other ways I finally just cut off the ends of the exhaust tubing, bent it over and crimped it. Now I have a constant check engine light on (405 & 406 if I remember right),but really haven't noticed any performance loss or gain from it. The clean intake is nice though.

I ordered the block off plate for the exhaust manifold. For the intake I'd thought I'd get a freeze plug. Does anyone know what size I'll need?
