  • Paging Ironman24!

Hi there, I am trying to get a better understanding of the MAFT+, and what it can do for my car. I have a 96 3.8 with the 5 speed. My car is running too rich, and I need to lean it out. I was told this product could do this. I talked to someone at www.grandprixstore.com where they sell the MAFT+ for the L67 and L68 motors, but he said he didnt think it would work on a camaro. Is there a model that will work on the camaro, where can I find it? I am serious about purchasing one, and have friends that can help with the set up. Have you tuned yours yet? Did you need to buy the autotap as well with the MAFT? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Spring is getting close, and I would really like to get my car running soon. Thanks.

Hey, the MAFT+ will work fine with your 96 Camaro. Sounds like the guys at grandprixstore don't know what they are talking about. I would suggest buying the MAFT+ from www.ramchargers.com

Unless you have done some serious mods like a cam or heads then your car should not be running too rich. I would look for other problems first if it is running rich. You DO need some kind of monitoring software to tune with the MAFT. Otherwise it's like guessing in the dark and you possibly may make your car run worse. I would suggest software from www.obd-2.com over Autotap, it's much cheaper and works well.

I did get my car tuned on the dyno with the MAFT+ It's running great and I will be heading to the track on the 13th.

Also, I know Magnus doesn't like "paging" posts in his forum so next time post something like "need help with MAFT purchase" ;)

Hey Ironman, I checked out the link and got kinda confused. I don't want to spend the money on the the autotap so I want this cheaper solution. Basically I pay 122 bucks and get this program with the patch cable, and then I can log info on my car to help tune it with a maft+?? Why is everyone paying out the a$$ for an autotap then? Have you used this program and like it?

i have this program and it's just as good as autotap especially when you download the 97 gtp enhancement. then you can see knock and everythig else.

Yup yup, make sure you get that L67 enhanced file so you can see knock and injector pulse width. I love the software, it was a little confusing at first but once you get your favorites set then it will start monitoring what you want when it connects to the pcm from the laptop. You can also save your logs with it and convert them to an excel spreadsheet for easy viewing.

My suggestion is to spend the $122 first for the software, make some logs of your car at WOT and cruise. That will tell you if you are running rich. Then you can go from there with the MAFT+, which you may not need.

I am not sure why my car is running rich. Ever since I have taken the cat off, the motor seems to be pouring in fuel. DOnt know if the o2 tricked the computer into a different set up or what. Do I need a labtop for the program you are talking about ironman? If I dont have access to one, should I just get the autotap instead? What kinda gains did you get from this. I know you havent been to the track yet, but can you feel hp gains? What setup did you use on the MAFT+? Thanks for all the info so far.

You need a laptop, you can't just install autotap on your car, its a computer program to monitor the car and figure out how to tune it.. his settings are irrelevant to you, being that he has a cam and other mods. You will get gains if you get the car running right, like ironman needed to tune the car to get the most outta the cam, and make it driveable

Yes you do need a laptop to run the program. Josh makes a good point and I honestly don't think you need software or the MAFT at this point. When you remove a cat you will smell much more fuel in your exhaust. This doesn't mean you are running rich. Can you find another local f-body guru, maybe in a club that has autotap or the obd-2 software? If so I'm sure they would ride with you and make some logs of what your car is doing. Much cheaper than buying a laptop and software.

Its not that I just smell more fuel, there is some kind of sludge in my upper intake. I can see the stuff through the opening when I took my throttle body off. I have no idea how to figure out what the crap in the intake is, but it smells like a fuel and carbon mixture. All I can figure is that for some reason, there is too much excess fuel. Do you have any ideas as to why this might be? What possible remedies besides an MAFT are there. ARe there auto places where I can have my car tested to see if it is running to rich or what problems I might be having?

That black sludge is carbon buildup and it's normal. My plenum was full of it also before I ported it. I don't know of any place to take your can and have logs made of WOT runs down the road. You really need some scanning software to watch your O2 sensor readings.

Matt, check out this webpage. Click on Automotive and look at Diacom. Give them a call and ask, I bet that software works on your OBD1 car.
