  • Waterpump drive....?

    I was raised around "Old School" cars. Carbs, kickdown rods, no comps. I try to adapt any of my knowledge from that over to the computer controlled cars that I love now. I know that most guys on a budget building carbed dragsters(and most who are not) use a bolt on water pump drive kit. these kits reduve the load put on the crank and can generate about 20 more horsepower in a V8. Anyone ever tried adapting one of these to fit a V6?

    If there is one im going to be mad because I just got done putting a new water pump on. LOL

      i guessi may need to clarify a bit. This is a bold on electric motor that keep the serpentine system from having to pull the water pump. It also allows uto keep the pump on when the car is off. This lets the cooled air int he radiator circulate through the engine. Helps cool the engine A LOT quicker. I know guys with dragsters that can cool there engines from 200* down below 160 in about 5-10 mins using this. So this would be very beneficial and the kit is only about 75$. Maybe we could get someone to fab up some brackets so we could attach them to outr engine?

        Well I know there are electric water pumps for our cars.

            I'm pretty sure these electric water pumps are not recommended for street driving. They're designed for short duration operation (racing only). They do save some hp, but are not designed to run continuously.

                Ok, so you say it is something to drive the pump, and it's electric. I haven't seen a stand-alone unit to drive your existing water pump. I've seen replacement water pumps that are electric.

                If there is a bolt-on that attaches to your existing pump, the electric motor is probably the same grade as the electric water pump. The point being, just make sure it is rated for continuous duty if you are going to run it on the street. Before you adapt it to run on your car... [img]smile.gif[/img]

                  I haven't seen any electric water pumps for our cars, only LT1 and LS1 cars. Our water pump is built into the whole front cover of the motor which also holds the oil pump.

                  I really don't see anyone spending the time and $$ to make a water pump for the 3.8. The whole serpentine system of the 3.8 doesn't suck away the HP like the older cars, it's very efficient.

                    Do a search on the topic, it was brought up a while ago. Also check out CSI's website or Jegs website for remote mount water pumps witht the temp controller. This will bypass the stock belt driven water pump and allow the water pump to flow whether the car is on or off. Their are a bunch of universal kits.
