Where've you been man?!?!

I just wanted to drop in one good off-topic remark before wandering off to bed: I love you man!!! - but a 3.4L can't make that kind of power simply because it would then stomp the crap outta my car!!!!!

Booooo!!!! :D

LOL

p.s. If you wanna go DOHC -- I hear the Northstar engine fits nicely. and people actually make motor mounts for it to work in a f-body. I'll see if I can dig up the link with it there. (its been done before).

Engine Bay of 94 Camaro with Northstar

The site claims it's a northstar motor in a 94. But the intake looks like an LS1 composite piece. Don't know if the intake could be used on a northstar or not. If anyone is more familiar with the Northstar motors you might be able to determine if it is what is claimed. No details though, just pictures.

it IS a northstar. was lookin for those pics for a while now.

the nortstar/LS1 looks identical. easiest way to tell -- look at the WIDEASS heads on that engine. its a northstar.

Hey, thanks for the invite. I definitely would if I could. I'm in Orange. It's a little far from Northridge, but I wouldn't mind popping in sometime to meet some of you guys. I'm familiar with GMEternal from Skapimp's rantings on this board. Where is he, by the way?

Here's the deal with my engine... I love working on it. It has around 70k, so a mild overhaul will be needed shortly for preventive maintenance. I was going to replace the timing chain, water pump, head gaskets, and do a major tune-up. That would be an excellent opportunity to do something with those heads. It runs good, I'm just anal about effeciency and maintenence. I would love to increase the horsepower and still have it run good AND pass smog.

I'm just running theories through my head here. So you actually are increasing your compression and compensating with the aluminum heads. It seems like you're taking a backward approach. Isn't there an aluminum head based on the design of our iron head already out on the market that would make those pistons unnecessary? If you're saving money by going the decreased combustion chamber/milled piston route, that's one thing, but I thought pistons and were kind of pricey? Are these off-the-shelf or custom? I'm not diss'n your ideas, I just want to learn your motivation for doing it like this. Also, you're asking quite a bit out of just a .5 increase in compression ratio... How much of a cam did you have in mind? Would you still have a solid idle with that setup?

p.s.- I LOVE this! There's some innovation going on here. I want to hear your other ideas and I'm sure there's a lot of people reading this that want to as well. I wish you would post them, but if not, my email is in my profile. Just think of the pissed off 3.8 guys if you develop a really easy way to pass 200hp with this engine. Thanks for sticking with the 3.4!!!

Edit: Hey Russell, another member here turned me on to this site. I now understand completely what you are doing and I think a rebuild is in my future. www.60degreev6.com

i came across this thread and decided to dig it up from the dust in case shadly is reading around on here -- your comment read true.. i wonder if any of the 3.8L guys are pissed. my dyno came out to 200hp / 244tq, and i havent even played with the engine at all yet (no head porting or polishing, no aftermarket cam, no AFPR, just headers - the only non GM-factory part on the engine)

lol.

anyway..just thot that was funny re-reading it and realizing what you said and what i've achieved..later on.

I have a question for you russel. What makes the aluminum heads flow so good? I currently have ported stock heads, and am working on porting my intakes, and installing a lt1 tb.

How far behind in hp/tq figures do you think fully ported stock heads and stock intakes with a lt1 tb, 19 lb injectors, and headers would be from your current set-up.

Thanks

lol..not just that. its a combination of things.

heres an idea of how well they flow.

@ .400" lift (the stock 3.4 cam is .395in/.410ex)
(these are real flowbench numbers as taken from flowbench charts)

ported iron heads by NRT:
153.5 in / 141.9 ex.

stock (you heard me right) Gen III aluminum heads
167.3 in / 132.9 ex.

thats stock. i havent done anything to my heads yet and the intake already flows better than tiagos NRT ported heads. the exhaust is damn close to his too. its not just the canted valves, but the D shaped exhaust ports, and the taller, more oval shaped intake ports. I have pics that i will post as soon as i can for everyone, but for now, you can check out my installation (currently operating) here:

http://camaro.adwire.com/modpics/ - server is currently down / working on the problem.

those are detailed pics of the changes i had to make to get things to work for any of you that are interested in it.

trust me the car is so much more responsive now... i do need to get a new clutch tho, finally wore out the one on there..

anyway..if anyone wants more info feel free to im me --- name is in the profile.

later.
