• ZZP ER-Series rocker arm install dyno / dyno waste spark ignition problem/ New Update

Ok, I was getting my baseline dyno run done today for the ZZP rocker install..

and I have my number 176.6 HP
somewhat dissapointing.. but, not too bad..
(see mods below)

The thing that sucks more is the RPM numbers on the graph are all out of wack.. they are like 50% of what they shuld be.. ex 5k rpm is 2.5 on the sheet..

This is due to something in the ignition system..
I talked to Jason McAllister (member of this forum) about it and he said that our ignition systems has a 2 spark system that includes a "waste spark" that could be totaly confusing the dyno.. Is this true?

The solution he found was to isolate a single plug wire from everthing else with cardboard as a devider.. (They did not try this at the shop)..

Anyway, has anyone else had this kind of problem on a dyno?? anything similar?? what did you do to correct it??

The friggin' shop is not beaing to cool about it either.. but they are a-holes and all they want is more of my money.. I will be returning to them for my post install dyno run for the ZZP rocker kit.. but I dont have much intention of going there again after that..

let me know what you all think

~Billy

Ehh.. I guess my numbers are not soo bad for my mods.. I was looking at some of James's (12secondv6) old posts on camaroz28.. and he has similar stiff as far as NA goes.. I cant "F" with the NOS..

Anyway what do people think aobut my crazy ignition problem??

I personally have never heard of this, nor had that problem on the dyno...could you post the graph?

when I got my car dynoed my RPMs were off too, thus making the torque readings wrong. Made me mad too. Anyone know of the proper wire to tap into. I did some research a while ago, and I think its a white wire comming off the PCM, #52 I think. I dont know...

Your dyno operator isn't doing it right.

Perhaps he should try using 2 signal wires for a proper RPM reading.

Ok,
I will scan the graph at work when I get the chance and post it on my website.. (maybe friday)

I acctualy dont have the torque reading.. it is in their system and I can get the print out if you need it..

Magnus! buddy!
I figured that they were doing something wrong..

Basicly they were using a single inductive wire sensor.. they were attaching the sensor to the various spark plug wires (and a ground) and not getting a good reading..

So, exactly what is the correct way to hook it up? it was a DynoJet Dyno.. it also tested A/F..

I really want the dyno testing to be correct..
This will also benifit the members of this board.. becuase i am basicly doing it as a favor to you all, and ZZP..

So any help /insight will truly help everyone!

thanks
~Bily

Yeah I had the same problem as well. But I went to a Ford place to get it dyno'd (only place in Central IL) and they didn't know how to do it. Oh well, the after dyno will be the best :D

I have experienced this at some of the dyno places I have been to.

This can DEFINATELY happen but there is an easy way to solve it.

Keith already suggested it.

Normally they hook one wire (clamp style) to a single spark plug wire. With our vehicles you need to hook 2 seperate wires (clamp style) to that same single spark plug wire.

This will get a correct tach signal and a correct dyno.

Sweet!
Ok thanks everyone..
I guess what I need to do is convince these guys to hook up the two sensors.. hopefully they wont be idiots and, acctualy be able to do this..

So tell them to hook up two of the inductive plug wire sensors.. and then hook them both up to the exact same spark plug wire?

thanks everyone,
Billy

Ok here is the deal...
I am so friggin' PO'ed at the first palce I dynoed, because the are so <insert explatives here> stupid. Basicly they were un-willing to give me another run due to their own ignorence..

SO! fortunatly I live in MD (lots of dynos around).. So I am taking my money elsewhere..
I gota recomendation from F-Body central (a ls1/lt1 shop).. and I am going to do another run..

I discussed what you all explaned to the new place's dyno operator, and he said that they would be able to do it!

For the sake of the testing, I am going to do another baseline run.. (for a more accurate graph and the fact that dyno numbers will vary from dyno to dyno)

I will be doing the first run next Thursday..
then the 21st will be rocker install time..
Then the week following the install will be Post dyno..

"THANKS EVERYONE" - for all of your help!

Good news: I decided to waste more money on another dyno, jsut because i hate the place that did the first one

Bad news: everyone will need to wait another week to see the first graph.. (the first graph wont be too exciting, its the second one that will be cool)

Later all,
~Billy

well maybe this is why my dyno was so crappy too (156hp@193lb toruqe). I will try to tell the place about this when I dyno my car in a few weeks.
