• Got it all back together after cam swap!!

After 26 LONG hours of tearing my car apart, swaping the cam, valvesprings, and lifters, i finally got my engine back together. I started her up BANG!, metal agaings metal, clanging noises coming from my engine!! I think that my new keepers didnt hold and i dropped one of my valves!! now i have to rip the valve covers back off and check the head, if a vavle did drop, then im going to have to ripp of the head and check the pistons!! on top of this, im broke now too!! im going to have to wait a couple weeks till i get paid again. this things driving me nuts. I may just say **** it and buy an ls1 to do a motorswap!

Damn that sucks.
I took a soft hammer and pounded on each valve spring assembly to make sure everything was in right. Can't be to careful, now I see why!

your gonna have to replace the bent vavles in the heads before the pistons would be messed up....

another way is to cut off the power to the fuel pump and with the valve covers off turn over the motor and check all the valves that way to make sure they move good.

You could pull the valve covers and use a breaker bar on the crank pulley with the tranny in neutral, that way you can watch.

^ what he said, you should of done this tho when you reinstalled the rocker arms, because you have to tq the rocker arms down when the the valve is fully closed and tq it to 22 ft/s

did you tq the rockers down then they were seated or did you just go through and put all the rockers on and tq them to 22 ft/lbs

well i ripped the valve covers back off. I did drop the # 4 intake valve. None of the others dropped, but out of the 6 springs on the passanger side, only two held. on the drivers side 4 of the six held, but none of the valves dropped. so now i have to rip the intake manifolds off and the passanger side head. redo the vavlesprings and replace that valve on the #4 cylinder. hopefully the #4 piston is ok and i can have it back together in a week or so.

you better pull the heads off both sides and get them checked out....if you did drop and bend that one valve it would be a good idea to atleast have that cylinder re-valve jobbed to make sure nothings warped and the valve will seal....

BTW, how did the retainers not hold? if you replaced the locks are you sure you used the correct ones because it is very easy to tell if they are on correctly or not...

Why did all of your locks come undone like that? What did you mess up on the install?

the keepers didnt hold, they were still in the retainers, they just didt hold on the valve. im wondering if i can use my old keeper w/ the new retainers. ill try to take some pics today too.

well, today i ripped the engine back apart in about six hours. good new though, no major damage to the piston, just one noticable scape, but i dont think it will hurt it at all. ill take some pics tomarrow and post them. but anyways, since i have the heads off, im going to have them port and polish w/ a 5 angle valve job. I will also be replacing the valves as the one that dropped is bent up. So hopefully here in a week or two ill have my baby back together w/ and extra couple hp for the p&p. ill keep you guys updated.
