• Big Project but will it help??????

I have 1985 Sports coupe, it originally came with a 2.8 that had a knock. I bought a 1995 Camaro 3.4L, now i heard that the 2.8 was a real loser performance wise, im wondering if the 3.4L will fare better? Ive been told it has 200-225HP but no one knows for sure. Now im in high school so performance is the top thing i want out of this car, Id basically like to compete with the 8 cylinders, so anything anybody can suggest for performance (It Cant be bored over) will be appreciated. If you know anything post it, thanx.

The 3.4L is rated at 160Hp and 215 ft.-lb torque I believe.

There is a lot of ways you can go with the 3.4L. You can add nitrous, turbo, etc. A member of this board has seen 336 RWHP out of his turbocharged 3.4L.

What is your goal?

since you are in high school i will suggest teh way that we always went about this kind of thing when i was your age.
who is the fastest kid in your school and what does he drive?
now that you know what you need to beat him you can make your decision about what direction to go for power.
for the rest of going fast you are gonna have to decide if you want the car to be a drag car or a canyon carver. you can get a pretty good compromise set up going if you make all your decisions carefully enough.

hope this helps

Let me get this straight...you bought the engine without knowing what kind of power it made ?

well i knew it was in the realm of 200. so i wasnt far off, but as for what i want the car to be, basically a street racer, not quite a drag car, and not a circut racer. just a street racer really. Id have to say the best car at the school is either a Convertible 98 Cobra or a Subaru WRX STi, so thats my only real competition other then the numerous amounts of 3.8L Stangs. I think i want what everyone wants though, just a damn fast car that you can be proud of.

Napa sells a 330hp 380ftlbs 350 crate engine for 1500$ throw that in there with a good tranny. Its the cheapest and easiest way to have the fastest car.

as of right now u aint in a league with the cobra so no way would it be competition for u. 12 second stock vechicle vs ur 3.4 that hardly turns 16's stock. to touch him u gunna need cam, exaust, intake, turbo or supercharger, can take lt1 procharger and customize it to fit ur 3.4block, and nitrous and thats just to touch him, do to the fact that the 3.4ls dont ahve much going for them i owned one that rwhp'ed at about 215 because i did intake, throttle body, exhaust, everything right. and mine was 93. u an get urs to be fast with little cash but to compete with a cobra. good luck. u got som ehigh hopes and i dont mean to put u down. caus eim not trying to. but yeah if u do a cold air intake with ra air to it, cut out the cat and put dual exhaust on it. it will run around high 15 low 16. i got mine to do 0-60 in 8.3 with 2 other people in the car that way almost as much as me and im 200 lbs. plus i only ran 93 octane. custom tune job for fuel. i will say this if u get it to breath right it will do what u want. and that is run. so i suggest ram air cold air. or just cold air. and exhaust. if leaving the cat go with a less restrictive muffler, like borla, if taking it off go with liek flowmaster but in high rpms u will not like the sound i sure as heck dont. just my 2cents.

Ha. A 98 droptop cobra would probably run high 13's or low 14's But not 12's. 98 cobras only put about 250-260 to the wheels. The STi is probably in the same range depending on the year.

To kill sti and cobra's that are pre 99 it will take a lot.
First thing you will need is knolage so go to the store and check out some chevy magizens, also look at the tech import mags (not the look how cool my car is fest) like turbo tech and high proformance, drag sport, Dsport and some others they will give you some ideas and lets you see what the impors are doing. look dont buy (deals with second important thing) unless it is very important, after you read go in the bath room and write some notes useing short term memory.
Read a lot and as questions here, camaroz28.com and gmvsford.com there is a guy there tearing his V6 down and building it back up.
Second thing you need is a job that pays a lot that is the make or break of a fast car.
Check out my car domain site for a few ideas.
Every week I put new stuff on there lately they have been all about the turbos, after I get some packages from ebay people and my next haul from summit racing that will change.
If you want cheap and fast you have to have ebay.
You could go as far as getting titanium valve train parts (not valves them selves but other stuff around them)for not a hole lot of cash.
I got 2200-$2400 of titanium valves, retainers, locks for a little over $400 used.
You can get turbos and nitrous oxide parts for cheap.
And if your not rich you need skills so you can save tons of money doing your own work and maybe even do work for others (ricers or who ever all there money is the same to me).
The best mod for an 85 is a 3.4L that is the statring point.
A 3.4 with a 2.8 intake is a good thing don't chang it.
2.8 & 3.1 intake = high end power (hp)
3.4 intake = low end power (torque)
That 85 ECU needs to be tossed for any later year up to 88, that is a mod I have been trying to research but is mostly un known.
You will need a cam eather from crane or ampreforamce.
To use your cam you will need ported intake, heads and different valve springs.
1.6 rockers will help too.
You car will need it all, every thing on my web site and more, my car domain site is about my 85 camaro, and soon my Z28 mods will start going up.
For the longest time I haven't had squat for mods till lately.

Wow i really appreciate you guys responding and im definetly coming out of this knowing more than what i did goingin. see before I bought the 3.4, i had every intention of taking the 2.8 and going all out with it, im talking Bore'n it and performance cam, the whole nine yards but i wa stold that it just wasnt worth it and that the '85 2.8 was just aengine that wasnt worth it and thats what made my desicion to buy the new engine. so is it suggested that I use the 2.8 intake system or 3.4's like "oil pan4" was talkin out?

well if you want to even be close to the cobra with a 3.4 you're definately gonna have to go forced induction...turbo or supercharger. a turbo is my preference for our cars. You will have to build your motor w/ forged internals and drop your compression so you can run some really high boost, you should buy new heads but if thats too much money, than port and polish the stock ones as much as you can. You're going to also need a big cam probably the VS cam from ampperformance or else a custom grind, new rockers, pushrods, and springs. depending how much you bullitproof your motor, you can also spray a 50-75 shot of nitrous. To get all of this to the ground you'll need an lsd and gears, either 3.55s or 3.73 and some good tires...if you do all of this youll be putting out some huge #s and probably be able to smoke that cobra

**** the V6. You have a third gen. Go the REAL easy route a carb'd motor. Then you dont have to worry about the computers and ****. You can build or even buy a powerful crate motor cheaper than you can build up a 3.4 -- and since its a 3rd gen wiring and fit are not a problem in the LEAST bit.

Its good to see someone else here has some sense. V8 Sounds better, costs less, will last much longer, and the car will be worth something in the end. Not to mention you have a much better chance of reaching your goals.
