ok I just got my hypertech and i dont know which things to modify. The only mods ive got on my 2000 firebird are slp cold air induction and 80 series flowmaster. I just need some advice on what settings I should modify. How high can I raise my rev limiter without messing up my engine? For the fuel its got the option to change to 93 and 87 octane, where i live the highest we have is 91, will my engine mess up if i leave it on 93 and use 91 or should put it on 87 and use 91?

Have it turn on your fans earlier (throw in a 180 stat while you're at it - easy and cheap). Hard to say if the 93 octane tune would give you any knock retard or not, but if you had or could borrow obdii/autotap, etc you would see it. Bump up the tranny firmness 50% at first. If you can get timed runs (Drag strip, etc)start working on the shift points for each gear - which may lead to increasing the rev limit. Don't raise the rev limiter just "because" Only enough it doesn't cut out - the engine you save may be your own. The manual actually gives decent info on shift points.

Hey Ron,ok i have the stock thermostat, if I tune it so that the fans start earlier do i need the 180 thermo. or can I leave the my stock one on? And what do you recommend setting the rev limiter to at first? I dont have the manual, it didnt come with it when I bought it used. I can get timed runs, any tips on the shift points? One more thing. I use this car everyday and also race it, should I leave it on stock settings when I do my everyday driving and just change them when im at the track?

Fred, I dont know about everyone else, but with the Hypertech Power Tuning i'm experiencing FAR better gas milage.
Before the HPP3 I would get about 280 out of a tank and now I EASILY get 320 and nothing about my driving habits have changed, so I recommend leaving it tuned at all times.
Also just buy a 180 'stat at autozone or something...they're only like 10 bucks and EASY to install.
As for the shift points its sort of a hit or miss thing. Go to the track and just try and get it the best you can. I haven't done this yet, so I cant tell you what works best for me.
Also I put my rev limiter to 6000...not that much of a jump but I know it's pulling hard the whole way through...now I just need to get to a dyno to back up my beliefs...

            Fred -
Here's a link to the HPP MANUAL

Like FloydSO68 said, I'd leave everything on all the time. The 180 is really an easy install. Just remember to crack open the little air bleeder valve on the housing after you change out the stat and let it warm up a bit to get the air out of the system. If you don't go with the 180, there's still a setting for 195 (stock) on the HPP that will turn the fans on quite a bit earlier than factory. Check around the site, I think there's a how to on a 160 stat install (same procedure).

Here's what I had on my 2000 automatic:
87 octane tune - wasn't racing and we only have 91
Fan's on 180 stat setting (with 180 stat)
Shift firmness at 50% (try different settings)
Rev limiter at 6000 (after playing with shift points, you may need to adjust 100rpm or so)
Hadn't gotten around to messing with shift points because it doesn't see much track time. Start out with small jumps, don't just crank it up and think all is good. Your best times may come from a lower shift point than you think you need. Read the manual link I put above and start with one gear at a time. PITA I know, but if you're trying to squeeze everything...

One decent almost free mod that will possibly help is replacing your air buffle box with a short piece of 3" pvc pipe. The box comes off with 2 plastic clips and simply put the pvc pipe in it's place. I'm not claiming miracles or 10 HP with this, but it seems to give a small breathing improvement to compliment your exhaust and HPP tuning.
