Wow P fast post I told you like 5 min ago...

Well I broke open the filter and found alot of meatl like P said. I had they guy down the street who is a mechanic come take a look. Seems like I spun a bearing now. When he was there it will crank over now w/o making the grinding noise so that is good neews. I am going to pull the motor out and check the oil pump/sender. Is there a way to do this w/o pulling the motor? If its not a bad pump/sender I will have to pull it out and rip it down any way.

Is there anything you guys want me to take pictures of? I figure I will take them of the oil pump if it is bad. Magnus said he never had heard of one going out and I respect his advice alot on this board. I figure if it is the oil pump I will get a chance to teach you guys a little maybe...Wish me luck and as always any advice is NEEDED and APPRECIATED.....Cody

This is very interesting.

I've HEARD of people "breaking cranks" and "cracking motors", but mostly from unreliable sources that just take their car to GM to have repaired.

Your problem is the first documented case so far of what seems to be a non user error break down.

I find it interesting that you didn't have any metal in the oil yet you have much in the filter. Either the filter is doing a great job or the shavings never got a chance to get into the pan.

Perhaps your oil pump did fail??? Which then resulted in the spun bearing. As you tear it down, you will eventually find out what used to be the owner of all the metal pieces.

Please take lots of pics.

Good luck with it. Your problem diagnosis has been very good. Just cut open the oil filter and check. Very smart thinking!

Uhh.... I could be wrong here, but if you found metal shavings, don't bother putting in the oil pump, your engine is TRASHED. Start shopping for a used longblock, you can find one for less than $700 through a junkyard.

Best of luck!

according to haynes,

remove oil filter
remove oil filter adapter, pressure regulator and spring
remove front engine cover (means removing the crank pulley, see one of the cam install guides about this i guess)
remove oil pump cover boils (need a Torx-30)

you should be able to do this with the engine still in the car. i had a friend with a mopar that broke the spring in the pressure regulator. the timing chain chewed the spring into bits and its was circulated. he had to rebuild that motor.

I agree totally with this statement!

And edge, maybe if you do buy a used longblock I could have your old one.

I had another mechanic check it out yesterday. Again the same diagnosis. Spun main bearings. He dosent seem to think that I will have damage in the cylinders because the pump wasnt working. Meaning no oil being pumped anywere except the crank case...I hope. I am going to support the the top of my engine and drop the cross member that my oil pan is straddleing I think. I am going to try anyway. I am looking at about $175 doolars worth of bearings and gaskets right now if that is all the damage...If I need a new motor P I am sure we can work out an arrangment. PArts+labor or something. Unless I need the motor for a core charge...I will take pictures and keep you all updated...10-4

Don't even bother with trying to do it from the underside with the engine in the car, that would be a major PITA. If you chewed a main bearing, your probably gonna need to have your crank turned anyway, since that rides on your main bearings. By the time you get done having parts fixed, you could have gotten a longblock. It's your call, depends on how soon you need the car. You could rebuild it to handle alot of power relatively cheap. Ball is in your court.

Edge is saling his car very soon. I dont think he wants to rebuild it for more power. I also suggest long block but might as well tear it down and see what kind of damage you did incase that is cheaper.

Looks like my initail plan to just drop the cross member isnt going to work so I am pulling the whole motor...So how hardd is it and is there anything I need to know before hand???

try what I did to swap the engine: remove hood ( i did mine from the fenders so I wouldn't have to worry about allignment probs) put jack under driver or pas side k-member. remove wheel on that side. manuever cherry picker to engine from side.
