  • Do-it-yourself Head Porting Question

I read that many of you guys ported your own heads.. how difficult is this? How do you know where you have to port the heads?

How much peformance gain does ported heads translate into?

When you port the heads do you also do anything to the valves or anything else?

    Let me know.. thanks

Well there are alot of dremel bits out there that make head porting pretty easy. Things to remember are:
    1. Less is more dont take out to much.
    2. Dont change the physical geomotry of the heads.
    3. Dont touch the valve seats.
    4. You have to get a valve job when u are done.

The dremel bits i used are:

Those are the most important. The extension tool is really good to use.

do the big porting work first, then get a valve job, then blend the valve job in...

If I'm not mistakn a valve job is where the machine shop recuts where the valve "seats" against the head to make them fully close when they should. They have to close and "seal" good for your car to run correctly.
