  • Debating cam. 3.4'ers inside!

First off, dont know if this should be in lounge or advanced tech. So move it if you have too, dont close it.

Anyways, Im looking at buying a cam for my car. Wanted to see how many people with just 3.4's have done this. What were gains/side effects. How much work to put in, etc. Thanks,

man I have asked the same question as you have and recieved no answers, only thing i've heard that you can sometimes get a rough idle at stops, and im still super interested in swapping my cam, what really sucks is we don't have much of a selection on cams for the 3.4

The gains of a new cam.
There are 3 reasons the 3.4 doesen't make power the cam, intake runner vol and the intake manifold.
You fix the cam and that's most of the problem.
You will have more power and less gas milage.
Any thing much bigger than a 260 grind and your going to need head porting, headers, intake porting bigger TB and bigger injectors.
The injectors and Tb are reserved if you go mechanical with your cam.
Any thing more than .440'' total valve lift and you will need to lose those stock springs.
You will have to get new lifters.
Don't wast time, get 1.6 rockers.
1.6 rockers and after market cam will all most all ways put you over the .440'' limit.
You can forget about those over priced valve train kits and get k-motion K-700 springs and be good for .490'' lift.
Any thing over .51''-.52'' lift and the valve guide will get in the way. You will mash the valve seals. Unless you get some +.050'' valve locks.

Not to long ago I was in the same shoes as you two were and I swore if anyone needed help with a cam for the 3.4, I would try my best.

Awhile ago, I got the Crower Baja Beast installed. The gains are very nice, top end almost has a v-tech feeling around 4000+. I really cant really be exact about how much Hp it gave me, I am very bad at estamating, but if I had to, I would say between 10-20hp. When we did the install, I replaced a bent pushrod (which helped me out. running with a bent push rod definetly ruins performance)and I replaced lifters (you have to with a new cam).

My cams specs are here: http://crower.com/misc/cam_spec/

        Part number : 03015

The second cam up from mine is

        Part number : 03043

The reason why I give you the next one up is becaues I kinda wish now I got the bigger cam. I wanted streetable with good strong top end. That is what I got, but the lobe is not as nasty as I wished it to be. I would say the Baja Beast is about 3 steps up from stock. Not to bad, and I must say, with my MPH in the 1/4, I should be hitting mid to low 15s. I just suck at launching my m5.

If i could do it all over again, I would have definetly gotten 1.6 rocker arms with high energy push rods. The install was a major pain. Ok prices, this is why i love Crower

Baja beast with lifters - $170+

Compu Pro with lifter - $200+

        CompCam rocker arms w/push rods from Ammperforance.com - $140+

Very reasonable prices, not to shabby. Also, look at Compcam, they have a very nice cam that would add a nice lobe and some power. The only thing is, the Compu pro crower cam is a tad bigger.

Well, hoped I helped, if you have any questions, just ask.

you can get a cam custom ground, the options are limitless

i had a crane cam , but sold it, i decided it wasnt going to be enough of a change to go thru with all that work to get the gains it was going to provide

Thank you guys for responding. Soke people disagree with my ways, but I want to mod my 3.4. I dont want to drop a V8 in it, or upgrade to a 3.8. If I could hit 14.9's regularly I would be fine with the performance of my car, I would move on to a little bit of looks, and I would have a nice little car. Ill be honest I would like kind of a lumpy idle. And I dont mind spending some money on it. I would just like to extract more power out of this dem ole 3.4 litre. Thanks guys for responding. Keep em coming. ;)

                    Those cower cams are wimpy.
If you want good power you will have to change springs and use lots of lift.

I have a list here of custom grinds that are possible. One good thing to also try is to put your engine information in Desktop Dyno 2000 and play with numbers based on what you have now. That will open up some options about what will work and what will not.

Nope. My cam is a wimpy cam. I did not have the money nor the know how to do the work my self. But either way, it did give me w whole new feel to my driving experience and a noiticable power gain.

As for the other crower cams, if the Compu pro seems weak, try the next one up.

I would suggest the PowerMax Cams through Jegs,
                            ADV. Duration = 264/274 Degrees
                            Gross Lift= .423/.423"
                            RPM Range = 1500-4500
                            It costs 169.00 and works on 2.8L 3.1L and 3.4L V-6 Camaros.
